AC Milan reached the European Champions League knockout round with a 2-0 win at Auxerre, while Arsenal's qualification future was left in doubt after they were lost at Braga 2-0 on Tuesday.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored twice against Auxerre in September’s Group G opener, netted the first goal in the 64th minute before Ronaldinho added the second during injury time.
The result guaranteed Milan second place in the group as Ajax Amsterdam slumped to a 4-0 defeat against leaders Real Madrid.
Auxerre produced a convincing display in the first half as seven-times champions Milan appeared satisfied to wait for a defensive error from the hosts or a flash of inspiration from Ibrahimovic.
The French club piled on early pressure on to Milan’s defence forcing goalkeeper Christian Abbiati to make several saves.
After the interval, both teams remained well organized and struggled to reached their opponents’ penalty area until Ibrahimovic fired a powerful shot over goalkeeper Oliver Sorin and under the crossbar for his fourth Champions League goal of the season.
From then on, the Italians had the majority of possession and Brazilian striker Ronaldinho sealed victory with a curled shot in extra time, minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Milan have eight points in Group G, four ahead of Ajax in third, with one match to play. Real Madrid top the group on 13 points after beat Ajax 4-0.
Real forged ahead with a goal of genuine quality as a superb long ball forward was flicked back by Mesut Ozil for Karim Benzema to fire high into the net.
And Jose Mourinho's men doubled their lead before the break, with former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa driving home from range via the aid of a slight deflection.
Cristiano Ronaldo added further gloss to the scoreline, firing home after some miserable play from Ajax gifted possession to the visitors before hitting a fourth from the spot.
The only note of concern for Mourinho was a pair of late red cards, with Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos dismissed for second bookable offences in the closing stages.
Arsenal were unable to shake off the malaise of their North London derby reverse to Spurs as they suffered a second successive Group H defeat, with Braga now level on points with the Gunners.
The Gunners succumbed to two late goals from Matheus in Portugal.
The Brazilian striker broke the offside trap before firing beyond Lukasz Fabianski in the 83rd minute before producing a splendid finish following a driving run in the third minute of added time.
Arsene Wenger's side must beat FK Partizan, who have lost all five of their matches to date, at Emirates Stadium on 8th December to be sure of booking their place in the knockout phase of the competition.
Shakhtar Donetsk are the new leaders of Group H and have 12 points on the board following their 3-0 success away to Partizan.
Taras Stepanenko fired home seven minutes into the second period, with Jadson adding a second before the hour mark and former Arsenal favourite Eduardo also on target soon after.
Chelsea secured top spot in Group F with a 2-1 victory over MSK Zilina but a much-changed Blues came close to an embarrassing result in front of their own fans.
Stamford Bridge was stunned into silence when Zilina took the lead in the 19th minute as Babtounde Bello produced a delightful first-time finish from the edge of the box following a slick one-two with captain Robert Jez.
Half-time substitute Salomon Kalou then provided the cross for Daniel Sturridge to restore parity early in the second period before Florent Malouda lifted the mood with the winner four minutes from time.
Marseille made sure of their progress from Group F behind Chelsea with a 3-0 victory over 10-man Spartak Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Mathieu Valbuena's delightful finish after only 18 minutes put the French champions on their way with Loic Remy's somewhat fortunate second coming early in the second period.
Welliton saw red for the hosts in the 64th minute after reacting to a sly nudge from Souleymane Diawara before Brandao set the seal on their success soon after.
Roma produced a stirring comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and triumph 3-2 against Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico in Group E.
Louis van Gaal's men went ahead in the 33rd minute through in-form striker Mario Gomez, who added his sixth in five Champions League games soon after with a composed finish.
Marco Borriello pulled one back for the hosts at the start of the second period, finding the net from a prone position after slipping as he went to meet Jeremy Menez's cross following a rampaging run.
Daniele De Rossi restored parity nine minutes from time and it was left to Roma legend Francesco Totti to hit the winner from the penalty spot six minutes from time, with Bayern confirmed as group winners despite the defeat.
Basel are still in with a chance of stealing second spot following their narrow success at home against CFR Cluj.
Federico Almerares gave the Swiss side the lead with 15 minutes on the clock as he slid in to fire home at the far post, with Felice Piccolo dismissed for the visitors late on.
