Ugandan government will reward in a big way the country's double gold medal winner at the on-going Commonwealth Games Moses Kipsiro, said a top government official on Tuesday.
Uganda's State Minister for Education and Sports Charles Bakkabulindi, who returned from New Delhi on Monday, told a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at his Kampala office that Kipsiro had made the country proud by winning two gold medals.
"He is a good ambassador of this country. He won not only one gold medal, but two. He deserves a big present," remarked Bakkabulindi.
The 24-year-old athlete won gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m final respectively, setting a new record in Uganda as no other Ugandan athlete has achieved this fate. After winning gold last week in the 5,000m, Kipsiro received a rear telephone call from Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda, thanking him for the work well done at the Games.
The minister said since the government rewarded gold winner in the last Commonwealth Games Dorcus Inzikuru with a house built for her in her village district of Arua, Kipsiro would be rewarded even twice as much.
"He is a real star and deserves a big reward that the government will give him," added Bakkabulindi.
Meanwhile, the minister told the media that upon return the team officials including the Chief de Mission William Tumwine ( Uganda Olympic Committee vice president) will be investigated and punished if found to be guilty of allocating some slots to relatives instead of athletes.
Bakkabulindi said while he was in India he heard that team Uganda had accreditation anomalies, problems with training kits and uniforms.
"We can't continue like this, over the years such fiascos have taken place and this affects our athletes," he stressed.
According to the minister, the ministry will handle the investigations together with the Uganda Olympic Committee President Roger Ddungu, who is also in New Delhi for the Games.
"We shall make everyone accountable and flash out fake sports administrators and an evaluation will be made when the team comes back on why we got only two medals," added Bakkabulindi.
Uganda has fielded teams in categories of athletics, rugby, table tennis, tennis, squash and badminton among others during the Commonwealth Games that will climax on October 14.
