Real Madrid moved back to within one point of La Liga leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 win at home to third-placed Valencia in the 33rd round of the La Liga on Sunday.
The result takes Madrid to back to within just one point of Barcelona, who could only draw 0-0 away to Espanyol 24 hours earlier.
Valencia were considered to be one of the most difficult rivals Real Madrid would have to face in its remaining six matches.
However, despite being third in the league, the visitors kicked off 21 points behind Real Madrid and ended it 24 points behind.

Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring with his 25th goal of the season in an excellent first half from the home side as Valencia struggled to get into the game.

Deportivo la Coruna also drew 0-0 in a dull game against Almeria.
Xerez fought back from 2-1 down at home to Racing Santander to draw 2-2. Tcheite scored twice for the visitors, but Victor Sanchez scored the goal that ensured honors finished even. Xerez continues bottom of the table.
Finally Tenerife beat Getafe 3-2 to give themselves a real chance of avoiding relegation. Nino was the hero for the home team with a hat trick that leaves Tenerife just one points from safety, while damaging Getafe's chances of qualifying for Europe next season.
Meanwhile Athletic Club Bilbao created all of the chances but was unable to find a way past Zaragoza keeper Roberto. The game finished 0-0 in the San Mames Stadium.
Saturday night saw Barcelona's 0-0 draw against Espanyol where the leaders had to withstand a physical display from their neighbors in a game that saw Dani Alves sent off for two Bellow cards.
Sevilla returned to form with a straightforward 3-0 win at home to Sporting Gijon. Freddy Kanoute, Luis Fabiano and youngster Cala, who netted his third goal in three matches, scored the goals that keep Sevilla in fourth place.
Finally Villarreal took another step towards European football with a 2-1 win at home to Atletico Madrid.. Godin and Rossi hit the net for the home side.
