In an exciting Saturday of top-class German Bundesliga soccer, the second round provided goals galore as Hamburg hammer Dortmund 4-1 to top the table, while giant Bayern were snubbed with second draw of the season. For the other games, Stuttgart hit Freiburg 4-2, newly-crowned champion Wolfsburg humiliated Koln 3-1 and Leverkusen pick up a deserved win against Hoffenheim. Meanwhile, Hannover salvage a point against Mainz and Nuremberg share the spoils in Frankfurt.
In a sensational game at the Nordbank Arena, Bruno Labbadia's Hamburg demolished Borussia Dortmund from the beginning stage. Three goals in the opening twelve minutes all but sewed up the points for the hosts, while Marcus Berg's second half strike put an end to any hopes the visitors may have had of a second half comeback.
Following last week's tired performance against Freiburg, Hamburg fans must have been astounded to find their team 3-1 up within the opening quarter of an hour.
Guy Demel got the hosts off to a perfect start when he poked home after a penalty-box ricochet in the 3rd minute, but the lead was quickly cancelled out as Paraguayan international Nelson Valdez sent a looping header over the helpless Rost.
However, a quickfire double from Brizilian midfielder Ze Roberto in the tenth minute and Paolo Guerrero in the 12th put Hamburg firmly in control as the hosts dominated play throughout the first half.
Despite a spirited second half Dortmund performance, Hamburg remained tight at the back and when Swedish new boy Marcus Berg scored his first league goal for the club in the 72th minute, the points were clearly staying on the Hanseatic coast.
In another eye-catching game on the day, ambitious German soccer giant Bayern Munich suffered a snub with the second draw ofthe season as they were tied 1-1 by Werder Bremen.
Last week, Bayern visited Hoffenheim to end up the opening game of the season with a disappointing draw.
On Saturday, Bayern forward Mario Gomez opened his Bundesliga scoring account for the German record champions with less than twenty minutes remaining, cancelling out a first-half strike by Mesut Ozil.
In the 39th minute, Aaron Hunt made space down the left and found Ozil in the box, who shuffled the ball from right foot to left before slotting it coolly past Bayern keeper Michael Rensing.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal brought on Ivica Olic for Miroslav Klose up front in the second half and five minutes in, the Croatian striker won a corner that led to great confusion inside the Bremen six-yard box before Clemens Fritz got the ball clear.
Later on, French midfielder Franck Ribery entered the fray for Bayern, replacing Jose Ernesto Sosa. The French midfield dynamo immediately made his presence felt, feeding a great ball through to Olic, who was again foiled by Wiese, the Bremen keeper this time pulling off an excellent reflex save.
Wiese eventually had to pick the ball out of the net in the 72nd minute. Having been caught offside half a dozen times, Gomez this time connected perfectly with a Philipp Lahm cross to stab Bayern level.
Newly-crowned champion Wolfsburg displayed the stuff of champions on the day, coming from behind to take three points in Koln with three late strikes.
Patrice Ehret put the home side in front in the 49th minute, but the Wolves turned the game around with two goals in as many minutes from Edin Dzeko in the 72nd minute and Pierre Wome's own goal just one minute later, before new signing Obafemi Martins made the points safe four minutes from the end of regulation time.
In the most-high scoring game of the day, Stuttgart came out on top in a six-goal thriller at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion to record their first three points of the season. In somewhat bizarrefashion, all the goals were scored in the second half with Brazilian midfielder Elson's long-range screamer eclipsing Pavel Pogrebnyak's first goal for his new club.
Leverkusen deservedly collected all three points in their first home game of the season against Hoffenheim. Indeed, the visitors had goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand to thank for keeping the match alive as the hosts dominated from start to finish at the Bay Arena.
Hannover salvaged a home point against newly-promoted Mainz. The home side played the better football but was made to pay early in the second half as Mainz took advantage of their hosts' inability to find the back of the net.
Nuremberg secured a deserved point in Frankfurt as, despite being overrun for much of the opening period, they gave a spirited second half performance which culminated in an equaliser through summer signing Albert Bunjaku.
Later on Sunay, Hertha Berlin will visit Borussia M'gladbach while Schalke 04 are to face challenge of newcomer Bochum.
