美国流行文化从A到Z——On pins and needles

on pins and needles的字面意思是“一堆大头针和绣花针”，实际引申为“如针扎的刺痛感”。这种感觉在身体某部分出现麻木的情况时非常明显。比如我们坐太久了，导致腿部发麻，如果这个时候突然站起来的话，就会明显感觉到一阵剌痛，这就叫pins and needles。

在医学术语中，pins and needles还有一个专门的称谓paresthesia(皮肤感觉异常，如灼痛、针扎痛、痒痛或刺痛)。跟绝大多数医学术语一样，这个词对普通人来说是天书，根本听不懂。他们一般都只用pins and needles，或者称自己有麻木感的那个部位“睡着”了(arms/legs/hands/feet fall asleep)。医生跟病人 Jack: Your neck .does“hurt ? 尽管pins and needles的引申义比较常用，但相关短语on pinsand needles还是来自前者的本义。“在针上”是什么感觉?当然是“如坐针毡”，所以on pins and needles用来形容焦灼地等待、

坐立不安的状态。举例如下：Mervvn was on pins and needless all day, waiting for the test results when he finally knew he was HIV-negative . he burst into tears.(整天都坐立不安，焦急地等待着测试结果。当他终于知道自己是的时候，他流下了开心的眼泪。) the jury foreman started to read the verdict. 需要特别注意的一点是，英文里恰巧有walk/tread/skate onthin ice的说法，但它们仅仅表示“冒险，做非常危险的举动”。换句话说，它们只是“履薄冰”没有“如 ”的部分，所以 表示“(像踩着薄冰一样)格外小心，”walk onpinand needless eggs/eggshells才是“如履薄冰”
