A could be可以用来代替 may/might be：
I wonder where Tom is.
He may/might/could be in the library.
我想知道汤姆在哪里。
他可能在图书馆。(也许他在图书馆。)
当be作为进行式的组成部分时，也可以这样用：
I wonder why Bill isnt here.
He may/might/could still be waiting for a bus.我不知道比尔为什么不在这里。
他可能还在等公共汽车。(也许他正在等公共汽车。)
当be作为被动式的组成部分时，也可以这样用：
Do you think the plane will be on time?
I dont know. It may/might/could be delayed by fog.
你认为飞机会准时到吗?
我不知道。它可能会因雾而晚点。(或许它会因雾晚点。)
在疑问句中，could或might都可以使用：
Might/Could he be waiting for us at the station?
他会不会在车站等着我们?(你认为他会不会正在等?)
但在否定句中could与may/might的含义有区别：
He may/might not be driving the car himself.
他可能不是自己在开车。(也许他不是亲自在开车。)
但 He couldnt be driving the car himself(他不可能在亲自开车)表示个否定的推论，意指这不可能，他不会开车。B could+完成式可以用来代替may/might+完成式(表示可能性)：
I wonder how Tom knew about Anns engagement.
He may/might/could have heard it from Jack.
我不知道汤姆是怎么知道安订婚的事。
他可能是从杰克那里听到的。(或许他是从杰克那里听来的。)也像上面A项所述那样，在疑问句中might或者could都可以使用：
Could/Might the bank have made a mistake?
银行会不会出了差错呢?(你认为银行可能出了差错吗?)
但在否定句中含义有所区别：
Ann might not have seen Tom yesterday.
安昨天可能没有见到汤姆。(也许她没见到他。)
但是：
Ann couldnt have seen Tom yesterday.
昨天安不可能见到过汤姆。(否定的推论;也许安和汤姆不在同一个城市里。)
