英国俚语:真倒霉
单看图片上零碎不整的奶酪片,您就知道,这块奶酪硬得不一般。不比细腻润滑的“cheesecake”(乳酪蛋糕;美国俚语:“性感玉照”),“hard cheese”(字面意:硬质乳酪)在英国俚语中,表示“tough/bad/ill luck”(霉运)。
关于“hard cheese”(真倒霉)的渊源,说法不一。著名俚语学家Eric Partridge(埃里克·帕特里奇)猜测,就常理而言,爽滑细腻的软奶酪更为美食家所青睐。当然,这种看法极具主观臆测性,不足以令人信服。 另一种看法认为,“cheese”源于波斯语“chiz”(事情,东西),所以,俚语“hard cheese”自然而然就可表示“hard thing”(不顺利,糟糕,倒霉)。与此意相同,在俚语中,“big cheese”常用指“重要人物、具有影响力的人”。 日常会话中,“hard cheese”可用来表示“同情”,如:You came across your ex-wife and her boyfriend? Hard cheese, old man.(你碰到你前妻和她男朋友了?唉!是很倒霉。) 或者,在某种场合下,“hard cheese”可表示不屑甚或轻蔑,如:Don't like your gruel, boy? Well, hard cheese.(这粥你不喜欢,唉,那只能自认倒霉了。)
