Cut and run: 逃离(军事常用语)
汉语中有“三十六计走为上策”,英语中的cut and run是个军事常用语,与我们的上策“走”颇有异曲同工之妙。战争中,若一方处于防守略势,为保存实力想要撤军便可用“cut and run”来形容。 相比而言,短语中的“cut”破让人费解,不过搞清了渊源肯定能让“困惑者”茅塞顿开。Cut and run原指“弃锚开航”,海战中,若停锚的船只遭遇敌人突袭,与其浪费有限时间费力起锚,不如索性斩断缆绳、弃锚起航,迅速躲避袭击。由此,“cut and run”成为公认的军事应急战略。 不过,随着时间的推移,现代意义上cut and run含有贬义意,常用来讽刺对手“为摆脱困境放弃进一步的行动”。看布莱尔在去年5月访问土耳其时,针对伊拉克撤军问题的态度和立场:We are not going to have any so-called quick exit, there will be no cutting and running in Iraq.(我们不会做所谓的迅速撤退,我们绝不撤离伊拉克。)
