关于“盐”的短语，稍一拾掇就能罗列一大串，如：说“你加深我的痛苦”最常用You've rubbed salt in my wounds（你在我伤口上撒了把盐），“邀请贵宾坐上席”可以说Please sit above the salt（请上座）…… 今天谈的the salt of the earth（精英）源于《圣经》。据《新约·马太福音》记载：耶稣对他的门徒说：“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? ”（你们是世上的盐，盐若失了味，如何才能再咸呢？）在这里，salt转义为elite of the world（中坚力量，精英，高尚的人）。这是耶稣在福音结尾时所说的话，既然他把门徒比做“世上的盐”，足见此种称赞高乎寻常。其实，盐自古代就很贵重，并被认为是“尊贵”的象征——罗马士兵有专门用来买盐的salary（津贴）；伊丽莎白时代，王公贵族们的餐桌上都摆着一个很大的盐罐，贵宾坐在盐罐的上首，正因此才有短语Please sit above the salt（请上座）。看两个关于“盐”的例句： When I entered the banquet hall, they all stood up and asked me to sit above the salt.（我一走进宴会厅，他们都站了起来，请我坐上席。） They think of themselves as the salt of the earth.（他们自认为是社会中坚。）
