Canard: 流传、谣言
不查不知道,一查吓一跳,看似简单的一个词canard却来路不凡。 Canard 在英语中的意思是“流传、谣言”,可它的本义竟是“鸭子”。 Canard 来自古法语词quanart(鸭子),这么一说容易造成误解,让人觉得“法国的鸭子不老实”。其实,canard 是法国习语“vendre un canard à moitié” 的简写, 意思是“to half-sell a duck”。鸭子当然不可能半卖,半卖也就是不卖,明显地戏弄、欺骗买者嘛。随着时间的推移,法国人又把vendre un canard à moitié(半卖鸭子)简化为bailleur de canards(卖鸭子),意指"撒谎",而canard也就演变为"谣言"了。 举个例子:There are certain stories canarding about the hotel.(有关这家旅馆的传闻有几种说法。)
