RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 27 -- The leader of Fluminense's defense, Gum was announced on Tuesday to need a period of two months to recuperate from a detached tendon in his upper right thigh.
With only 12 rounds remaining in the 2011 Brazilian Championship, the player is unlikely to be able to return to the field. The athlete suffered his season-ending injury in the first half of Fluminense's 1-1 draw against Atletico-PR on September 25.
Fluminense's head coach Abel Braga will need to choose between Digao and Marcio Rosario to fill the fullback's position.
The reigning champions of the Brazilian Championship, Fluminense currently stand in fifth place with 41 points. They trail first placed Vasco da Gama with 49 points, second placed Corinthians with 47 points, third placed Sao Paulo with 46 points and fourth placed Botafogo with 45 points.
In the 27th round of play the team will receive Santos on October 1.
