PHNOM PENH, July 4 -- Ensuring security and stability in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is crucial for Hong Kong residents and will also contribute to maintaining security in the region, Cambodia's Justice Minister Koeut Rith said on Saturday.
In an interview with Xinhua, the minister said he fully supports the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the HKSAR, which was unanimously adopted by the National People's Congress on Tuesday.
Rith said that based on the principles of the sovereignty of the state as stated in the United Nations Charter, each sovereign state has full rights to make its own laws to ensure security, order, and stability.
"The Hong Kong territory is a part of the sovereign territory of the People's Republic of China, so making the law on safeguarding national security in the HKSAR is the sovereign affair of China and is the right thing that goes in line with the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, as well as international principles," he said.
He added that national security is a common issue and is a precondition for ensuring a country's stability, prosperity and development.
"In this sense, ensuring stability and security in Hong Kong will serve the common interest of Hong Kong residents and will also contribute to maintaining security in the region," said Rith.
