"Dao Gang Festival" is an annual traditional sports festival held on the eighth day of the second lunar month.
On this day of every year, people put on their festival costumes and come to the meeting place of "Dao Gang Festival" in groups to watch the activity of "going up Dao mountain and going down into the sea of fire".
After several rings, the first seven or eight "Xiangtong" (the performer of upper Dao pole) performed "Fire Dance" for the crowd. They are naked, barefooted, imitating all kinds of animal movements, jumping back and forth on piles of red burning charcoal, and occasionally scratching the charcoal fire on their bodies, rolling and rubbing round fireballs in their hands, but they don't care. After the baptism of fire, it means eliminating all kinds of disasters in the new year.
In the center of the conference hall, there are two thick wooden poles about 20 meters long. 36 sharp long knives are tied on the wooden poles. The knife edge is upward and the silver is shining, forming a fearsome knife ladder. When people were in awe and worry, the sacrificial ceremony that was necessary for the pole was started. Several warriors in red clothes, red heads and barefoot walked to the pole, knelt in front of an ancient picture of a military general, raised their glasses and chanted, then drank the wine. Then, they jump up, climb up the knife pole with lightness and agility, hold the knife edge with both hands, step on the blade with both feet, and go up.
The first person to climb to the top, but also to do a difficult handstand action, set off firecrackers. Thousands of people looked up and cheered from time to time.
This ancient and peculiar "Dao Gang Festival" has been officially designated as the traditional sports activities of the Susu people by the relevant departments.
On this day of every year, the martial arts practitioners practice hard and teach advanced skills. Therefore, it has been passed down from generation to generation, forming a knife bar joint. In the festival, the people of the Lisu nationality in and out of renshili, dressed in festival costumes, gathered in all directions to the knife pole field by the Yangchang river. When night fell on the earth, there were many fires in and out of the knife pole field. All of a sudden, the four big fires in the center of the square burst into the air, illuminating the crowd full of spring. Then the gongs and gongs rang, and the people in the pole field held hands with each other and danced around the bright fire. When four heaps of fire left only red coals on the spot, the host of the activity announced the start of "jumping into the sea of fire". At this time, the five barefooted Hussars rushed into the fire immediately, bouncing constantly inside, stepping on countless sparks flying everywhere, like flying meteors.
Then, with lightning speed, the firemen wiped their faces and bodies with red firecoals, and then let the fireball roll and rub in their hands. The onlookers were sometimes cheerful, sometimes nervous, sometimes praised, sometimes surprised Burst in with cheers. After a period of intense performance, the female pile of fire charcoal was trampled to pieces, and the flame was dying, and the "sea of fire" activity ended. The next day, two red flower tree poles more than 20 meters high were erected in the pole field, and thirty-six long knives with upward blades were crossed among the trees. At noon, the happy crowd filled the square again. With the order of the host, the gongs and drums were loud and the firecrackers were blaring. Last night, the five fogs in the "sea of fire" wore blue cloth hats, big and red robes, and rushed barefoot to the bottom of the saber pole tree. They filled up a glass of courageous wine and drank it. Then jump on the knife pole, grasp the upper blade with both hands, step on the lower sharp blade with bare feet, use the qigong skills that you usually practice to support your feet, and climb up step by step. When the warriors climbed to the top of the pole, the crowd was stunned and cheered loudly.
It is said that the sabre pole Festival on February 8 of the lunar calendar of the Susu people commemorates an ancient hero of the Han nationality who bestowed great kindness on the Susu people. The people of the Susu people regard the death day of the hero as their traditional festival, and express their feelings of being willing to go through the fire and water to repay each other with symbolic rituals such as going up the Dao mountain and down the fire sea. On the day of saber pole Festival, several strong men performed the "Fire Dance" ceremony first. Barefoot, they jumped into the burning coals and performed all kinds of stunts. The next day, they tied the sharpened 36 long knives with rattan bars horizontally on two wooden frames more than 20 meters high, forming a knife ladder. The performer is barefoot, barehanded, climbing from the blade to the top, and performing various difficult movements on the top of the pole.
