BEIJING, Feb. 14 -- A Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday refuted U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's allegations of "Chinese infiltration in the U.S.", noting that the remarks were awash with Cold-War mentality and political prejudice.

Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the comments when responding to reports that said Pompeo once again talked about Chinese infiltration in the United States during a recent interview.

Geng told an online news briefing that China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs. "China's diplomatic missions and civil groups in the U.S. observe international laws and bilateral agreements. Their interactions with the U.S. governments at all levels are to promote mutual understanding, exchanges and cooperation, and are legitimate, lawful, open and aboveboard, and beyond reproach."

China follows the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the leadership of the Communist Party of China is a defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Geng said. "This is a choice of history and the people."

Geng said anyone who seeks to sow discord between the Chinese people and the CPC should know that their attempts will prove to be in vain.

He said that China-U.S. relations have generally moved forward despite twists and turns, and have brought tangible benefits to the two peoples since diplomatic ties were established more than 40 years ago. A sound and stable bilateral relationship between the two countries serves the interests of both sides and is also the common expectations of the international community.

"We advise certain people in the U.S. to abandon their Cold War mindset and ideological stereotypes, stop discrediting China's political system and stop undermining bilateral exchanges and cooperation," Geng said.
