BEIJING, Dec. 1 -- China has made progress in the prevention and treatment of AIDS, keeping its prevalence rate at a low level, according to the country's top health authority.
AIDS transmission through blood transfusions has been basically blocked, and transmission through intravenous drug use and mother-to-child transmission have been effectively curbed, said the National Health Commission (NHC) at its official WeChat account.
China has 958,000 people living with HIV/AIDS by the end of October, after 131,000 cases of new infections were reported in the first 10 months of this year, according to the NHC.
The NHC has made arrangements for combating transmission through sexual contact, the main mode of transmission currently in China, and eliminating mother-to-child transmission.
Regions of relatively high prevalence rate and deeply impoverished areas, as well as young adults and students have been identified as work priorities, according to the NHC.
The NHC vowed to enhance publicity and education work to raise personal awareness of health responsibilities and step up cracking down on law violations and crimes related to AIDS transmission, among other prevention and treatment measures.
