HAVANA, June 1 -- President Raul Castro stressed on Thursday the country will remain the socialist character after the parliament approved a reform plan to allow private companies to develop business in the country.
Cuba's National Assembly met and analyzed the progress of economic and social reforms started in 2010 as well as the nation's development plan until 2030.
Castro expressed that the documents, previously approved by the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party and now backed by the parliament, will allow the "upgrade" of the country's social and economic model.
"It means that we will change everything that needs to be changed," said the Cuban leader.
He also warned against the concentration of property and wealth even if private workers or small businesses are legal in the country.
So far, Castro's reforms have allowed for self-employed workers and small cooperatives, but the strategic sector of the national economy will remain in the hands of the government companies.
