　　For most of my 20 years as a teacher, summer vacation was my time to relax. So why was I standing in the schoolyard of an unfamiliar school, wearing myself out for a summer teaching job? 　　It was Saturday morning. I heard loud noises of moving furniture in the next room. I could almost feel the excitement of John who was soon going to get a room of his own. 　　The bike-sharing companies that are powering a transportation revolution in China’s urban centers are not like those in the rest of the world. Their bikes have no docking ports or assigned zones for parking. Instead, riders open their smartphone apps, hop on, and start riding. So easy!

　　In 2017, Ofo, China’s bike-share pioneer, launched its first fleet of bicycles in Beijing. The bikes’ bright yellow frames were soon met by the orange-rimmed（镶边）, basket-equipped models launched by Mobike, Ofo’s main competitor today. In little over a year, the two companies have had a huge impact on revitalizing (重振) cycling in China, particularly among young people.

　　Ofo placed 1 million bicycles across 35 cities and registered 15 million users in its first years, while Mobike has now gained more than 10 million unique users and bicycles in 21 cities. Inspired by their success, at least 10 other companies have jumped into the market, launching their own app-powered, brightly colored bikes in quick succession. But Mobike and Ofo are far ahead of them.

　　The two industry leaders each take a different marketing method to a similar product. The Mobike app uses GPS to display bikes’ locations to users. They can use the map to reserve a bike and walk over to it. A scan of the bike’s QR code (二维码) unlocks the bike, and when users manually（手动地） lock the bike at the end of their trip, the app records the trip’s end and the bike will pop back up on the map as available. Equipped with this wireless technology, Mobikes cost between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan. Rides cost 1 yuan for an hour or a half hour, depending on whether a user chooses a “Lite” or regular bike, and the deposit (押金) required to the service is 299 yuan.

　　Ofo, meanwhile, is devoted not just to producing its own bikes, which have slim yellow bodies and cost about 250 yuan, but also to connecting existing bikes to its network----- a philosophy that begins with the practice of 2000 bikes offered to a campus bike-share program. The 2000 bikes were the first generation of Ofo. Yet the majority of the company’s bikes are currently ones that have been specially manufactured and fitted with their lock system. Unlike Mobike,Ofo bikes themselves are offline: their locations are tracked through users’ cell phones. Users find a free bike, enter the license plate number into their app, and receive the bike unlock code. When they have reached their destination, they end the ride on the app and manually lock the bike. Rides cost 1 yuan for an hour and the deposit is 99 yuan.

　　W: Yes, of course, Henry. What’s up?

　　M: It’s about my mother. She’s ill and has to go to hospital tomorrow. The doctor says she needs

　　a small operation. The problem is my daughter, the baby. You see, my wife is on a business

　　trip in China now. She won’t return until next Friday. So there’s nobody to look after my

　　daughter.

　　W: You mean you need a few days off to look after you daughter?

　　M: Yes, that’s it. Will that be right?

　　W: Yes, I’m sure it will. All I want to do now is to make sure there’s someone to take your place

　　to follow up on our project while you’re away. How long did you say you need?

　　M: My mother should be out of hospital next Wednesday, so I can be back the day after that.

　　W: OK.

　　Text 9:

　　M: Hi, Jennifer! I called your home this afternoon, but nobody answered the phone.

　　W: I wasn’t at home this afternoon. I went to Safari World with my brother today, and my

　　parents were at my grandparents’.

　　M: No wonder. So how was Safari World?

　　W: It was great! I especially liked the monkeys. They were jumping all over the trees. They were

　　so cute.

　　M: Did you feed them?

　　W: Yes. The zoo workers allowed us to feed them some bananas. Those were the only animals

　　we were allowed to feed there.

　　M: Did you see any lions there?

　　W: Yes. They were just walking around, looking relaxed. We were not allowed to get too close to

　　them. I just took a few pictures of the lions and then went to see the tigers.

　　M: What did you think of the tigers?

　　W: Not very impressive. They were just lying around and sleeping. I was really impressed by the

　　peacocks. They were so beautiful. By the way, why did you call me this afternoon?

　　M: I wanted to invite you to a movie. I went with Sara instead.

　　W: Sorry I missed it.

　　Good morning! I’m Samuel Davis, and this is the ten o’clock news report. I hope everyone is having a fine Monday morning. It’s getting pretty wet out there, so take an umbrella and stay dry! I’m here today with Matt Milter, who has completed his 29000-mile journey in just six weeks, with a total of 180 hours in flight. Beginning in California, he made twenty-five stops in fourteen different countries including England, Italy, Greece and Egypt. His longest trip was a sixteen-hour flight from Hawaii back to California.

　　Born in South Dakota, Matt has said that as a child he was scared of flying. All of that changed when he received his pilot license at just seventeen. After that, he only spent a few years planning everything out before beginning his journey around the world. Matt is here with us today for an interview. Welcome, Matt!
