The US trade deficit widened in July for the first time in four months as demand for American-made goods slowed on the back of global economic uncertainty.
The gap between imports and exports grew 0.2 per cent to $42bn from a downwardly revised $41.9bn in June, commerce department data showed. The figure came in below economists’ estimates of $44.3bn.
A wider trade deficit acts as a drag on growth because the US typically spends more on imports while taking in less from the sales of American-made goods.
Europe’s recession and slowing momentum in emerging economies such as China have pulled back demand for US products. Exports fell 1 per cent to $183.3bn, the biggest decline since April, due to weaker sales of cars, telecommunications equipment and heavy machinery.
The US posted a record $29.4bn trade shortfall with China, the largest with any single country, while the deficit with the European Union surged 42 per cent to $12bn, the widest since October 2007. American exports to Germany were the weakest since February 2010.
The decline in US exports outpaced a 0.8 per cent fall in imports to $225.3bn from $227.1bn in the prior month, which reflected a drop in the value of inbound deliveries of crude oil to $25.8bn from $26.4bn. In July, the price of a barrel of crude declined to $93.83 from $100.13 the prior month.
“Imports fell for the fourth consecutive month, something that has not happened since February 2010. The main reasons was lower oil imports, influenced by lower prices?.?.?.?this is not likely to persist as oil prices have been rising in recent weeks, said Jill Brown, vice-president of economics at Credit Suisse.
The US economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.7 per cent in the second quarter, down from growth of 2 per cent in first three months of this year. Many economists believe growth will remain lacklustre for the rest of the year, partly due to falling demand for US products abroad.
US employers added just 96,000 jobs last month, down from an increase of 141,000 jobs in July and well below the average 226,000 jobs a month created from January to March. The uncertainty surrounding job and salary prospects is likely also to stall consumer demand, the biggest driver of the US economy.
The weak data has lifted expectations that the Federal Reserve will take further monetary easing action at their meeting this week.
Separate figures released on Tuesday showed small business sentiment rose in August.
The small business optimism index from the National Federation of Independent Business rose to 92.9 from 91.2 in July, as owners felt more confident about sales, employment and capital spending.
Analysts had expected the index to reach a level of 91.5.

However, few employers continue to think the current period is a good time to expand on the back of political uncertainty, and small-business owners continue to act cautiously when it comes to growing their enterprises.
The survey of small-business owners asks questions based on plans to increase employment, capital outlays and inventories as well as whether they expect economic and credit conditions and sales to improve.
“In spite of a terrible jobs report from the labour department and an increase in the number who view the current period as a terrible time to expand, small-business owners continue to show their resilience, said NFIB chief economist William Dunkelberg.
“It is possible that the uptick in their spirits will forecast the election outcome and the chance for a favourable resolution of our fiscal dilemma. If election odds start changing, [business] owners and consumers may change their minds about spending, hiring and saving.
