The Nez Perce Indians are a tribe that lived in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. At the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition (远征队),which was one of the first journeys by Americans from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast and back again, the Nez Perce territory (领土)covered about 17 million acres, covering parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. But that was a brief sweet history.

In September 1805,when Lewis and Clark came off the Rockies on their westward journey, the entire exploring party was hungry and ill — too weak to defend themselves.Had the Nez Perce chosen to attack them, they could have put an end to the Lewis and Clark expedition there on the banks of Clearwater River. Instead the Nez Perce welcomed the white Americans and looked after them until they made a full recovery. Thus began a long friendship between the Nez Perce and white Americans. But white men ’ s greed for land and gold finally broke the friendship.

In 1855 Governor Isaac Stevens of Washington Territory invited the Nez Perce to a peace conference. He said there were a great many white people in the country, and many more would come. But the chief of the tribe at that time, Old Joseph, replied, “Take away your paper. I will not touch it with my hand. ”

Things were quiet for a while after that, but not for long. When Old Joseph died, the chiefship was passed onto Young Joseph. In the late 1870s,government officials came to order the Nez Perce to leave the Wallowa Valley and then began hard battles between the Nez Perce and the white soldiers. After the tribe had fought thirteen battles and moved 1 ,600 miles towards Canada in an attempt to retreat (撤退)north, Young Joseph, gave in to the United States Army. Here was his famous statement, “Hear me my chiefs. I am tired ; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever. ”

In 1885,chief joseph was sent along with mang of his band to the Colville Reservation in Washington where Joseph continued to lead his band for another 25 years, at times coming into conflict with the leaders of 11 other tribes living on the reservation

When thinking about placing a human being in space, one of the most important questions

was how to design special clothing needed to protect a person from the dangers of the space environment. The cold of space will freeze skin in a short time. The fierce heat of the sun can cause severe burns. The lack of atmosphere can cause gases in the body to expand and even burst. With no oxygen to breathe, a human being will die in only a few moments. Radiation from the sun is another risk in space. So is damage from small pieces of rock and objects like meteoroids (陨石).

In 1933, an American flyer, Wiley Post, designed one of the first successful devices to protect a pilot at extreme heights. It was a large device that looked like a can surrounded the pilot's head. Astronauts in the American space agency (NASA) flew the first American space flights in the early 1960s. The clothing was similar to that invented by Wiley Post.

Today, astronauts wear very different protective clothing. It lets them move, do useful tasks, and stay outside their spacecraft in comfort and safety for several hours. The spacesuit is called the shuttle extravehicular mobility unit or EMU. It was designed to endure longer and to permit more movement than earlier spacesuits.

The EMU has a number of parts that an astronaut can link together by using only one hand, which makes it possible for each astronaut to select the parts that fit correctly.

Nowadays, NASA scientists are also considering the kind of spacesuits that would be needed for exploration on the planet Mars. Because of the gravity on Mars, spacesuits may have to be designed to be lighter than suits used in orbit or on the moon. The equipment may also have to protect astronauts from dust carried in the winds on Mars. And, they must be easy to repair and keep clean during a longer flight to and from the red planet.

  28. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the dangers of space environment?

  A. Gases in the body.

  B. Fierce heat from the sun.

  C. Lack of oxygen.

  D. Radiation from the sun.

  29. Which of the following statements is true, according to this passage?

  A. Astronauts wearing earlier spacesuits had some difficulty in moving, doing

  useful tasks and so on.

  B. Wiley Post designed the first protective clothing for astronauts.

  C. EMU has many parts that can be linked together by using two hands.

  D. Special spacesuits have been used for exploration of the planet Mars.

  30. The underlined word “endure” means _______.

  A. provide

  B. move

  C. last

  D.

  live

  31. The best title of the passage might be ______.

  A. Space exploration

  B. Astronauts’ flights

  C. The Evolution of Spacesuits

  D. The Advantages of Spacesuits

  D

Our character, basically, is made up of our habits. "Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny (命运)," as the saying goes.

Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are  often unconscious patterns, they constantly daily affect our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.   As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, "Habits are like a cable. We weave a rope of it every day and soon it cannot be broken." I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I know habits can be learned and unlearned. But we also know it isn't a quick fix. It involves a process and a tremendous effort.

Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were shocked as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half million miles.

Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull. However, most people don’t realize or admit it. Getting rid of bad habits really requires great willpower and some changes in our lives. Lift-off takes tremendous effort, but once we break out of the pull of gravity, we can enjoy unprecedented(空前的) freedom.

Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world together and keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.

32.Why did the author quote the saying in the first paragraph?

A.To show the author was a wise man.

B.To support the author’s opinion about the habit.

C.Because a great educator asked the author to do it.

D.Because the author liked the old saying very much.

33.Why does the author say habits have powerful effects on our lives?

A.Because habits can constantly affect out character.

B.Because habits can be learned and unlearned.

C.Because you can reap a character by sowing a habit.

D.Because a habit is like a cable and useful to our life.

34.What does the writer mean by referring to gravity pull?

A.Ridding bad habits needs great willpower.

B.Breaking the gravity pull means enjoying freedom.

C.To prove that the habits can work with us or against us.

D.The gravity pull is very important in our lives

35.Which can be the best title for this passage?

A.Forming a good character is important

B.The importance of the pull of gravity

C.Excellence is not an act but a habit.

  D.The powerful factors of habits

  第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Around the world there is an increase in the demand for reforestation. This is because the consumption of the forests has affected not only the animals living in the area but also the people. And reforestation is about the rebuilding of the forests that have been severely destroyed. It can offer a lot of benefits when the recreation is successful.

  36. _____ This includes collecting seedlings(幼苗) that are native in the area to make sure that there is a natural reconstruction of the area. Some additional trees which are not native in the area also need to be planted. 37. _____ The importance of having multiple species of trees is considered to make sure that the needs of other species that will live and grow in the area are met.

Destroying a forest is easy but rebuilding it is really hard. 38. _____ The plan must include accurate spacing on plants and trees. This is to ensure that they won’t cover each other while they grow. 39. _____

The forest greatly helps in the reduction of the air pollution. Trees are responsible for the production of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide. 40. _____ It is there for a reason just like everyone else on this planet.

There can’t be a better way to restore the balance of nature than to increase the forest area. We must remember that the forest is a natural habitat of a wide variety of animals and plants. In this manner, there is no substitute for reforestation.

There are many things to be done when it comes to this type of effort.

And global warming will speed up the destruction of forests.

Keep in mind that you can’t just plant the seedlings anywhere.

It is important to make sure that they are suited to the climate and the type of soil.

Recreations won’t work until all these details have been considered.

So a good plan is needed to make the reforestation a successful one.

The forest also protects us from typhoons and other natural disasters.
