BANGKOK, Oct. 28 -- Thai Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan on Monday said in a press conference ahead of the 35th ASEAN Summit that security agencies are now on high alert in relation to security measures, focusing on effectiveness and collaboration.
Founded in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
"I would like the general public to please show hospitality towards visitors coming to participate in the upcoming 35th ASEAN Summit," said Prawit, adding that the government has already declared Nov. 4-5 as public holidays to avoid road congestions in Bangkok and its vicinity.
Deputy Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk also said that roads will be closed in certain routes to facilitate the motorcades of delegates.
Some 1,700 policemen and joint units will be guarding the summit venue, hotels, transportation routes, and related event venues in Bangkok and at the summit venue.
Prawit told the press that upcoming ASEAN Summit is the most important ASEAN meeting held under the chairmanship of Thailand this year.
There will be about 3,000 participants to attend the summit, said Prawit.
