During that stage, I didn’t graduate from college in New York and I was working as a practice student at my University's Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was seated on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellows dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink (眨眼示意). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seenAll of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just warmed me up and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me, a poor, unhappy college student, into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.

My parents were in a huge argument, and 1 was really upset about it. I didn't know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to allow me to stay the night at my best friend's house. Though I knew I wouldn't tell her about my parents’ situation, I was looking forward to gelling out of the house. I was in the middle of packing up my things when suddenly the power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the power came back on.
I was really disappointed because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that I'd stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy and said, "Great and precious opportunity."
"What is?" I asked.
"To talk, you and I” he said. "To hold a private little meeting about what we’re going to do with your mom and dad, and what we're going to do with ourselves now that we're in the situation we are in."
"But we can't do anything about it. Grandpa," I said, surprised that there was someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same "boat" as I was.
And that's how the most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting there in the dark, we talked about our feelings and fears of life — from how fast things change, to how they sometimes don't change fast enough. That night, because the power went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could safely talk about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be.
Suddenly, the lights all came back on. "Well," he said," I guess that means you'll want to go now. I really like our talk. I hope the power will go out every few nights!"

Baths and bathing have long been considered of medical importance to man. In Greece there are the ruins of a bathtub and water system built over 3,000 years ago. The Romans had warm public baths. In some baths, as many as 3,000 persons could bathe at the same time.
Treating disease by bathing has been popular for centuries. Modern medical bathing or hydrotherapy, first became popular in Europe and by the late 1700’s also become popular in the United States.
For many years frequent bathing was believed to be bad for one’s health. Ordinary bathing just to be clean was avoided and perfume was often used to cover up body smells!
By the 1770’s doctors began to say that soap and water were good for health. They believed that it was good for people to be cleaned. Slowly, people began to bathe more frequently. During the Victorian Age of the late 19th century, taking a bath on Saturday night became common.
In the United States ordinary bathing was slow to become popular. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, many Americans were known as “The Great Unwashed!” In one American city, for example, a person could only take a bath every thirty days! That was law!
Frequency of bathing today is partly a matter of habit. People know that bathing for cleanness is important to health. Doctors know that dirty bodies increase the chance of diseases. As a result, in the United States, people generally bathe often. Some people bathe once a day at least. They consider a daily bath very necessary to good health.

Dear LiMing,
I’m more than happy to learn that you will visit your American teacher soon at his invitation. Since I have been living in America for over three years, I’d like to offer you some advice on how to behave appropriately.
For one thing, don’t be late or you’d better make a short apology for being late. If you could bring him some Chinese tea which shouldn’t be too expensive, that would be greatly appreciated. For another, while enjoying the dishes, try to say something nice to express your appreciation of the host’s cooking skills. Last but not least, it’s not a good idea to eat and run after the meal as most of us do in China. Remember to say goodbye to the family before leaving.
Hope my advice will be helpful.
Yours,
LiHua
