A young woman carrying a three-year-old child got on a bus. The conductor hurried to give her a warm welcome and then kindly asked the other passengers to make more room for the woman and her child. On seeing this, people began to talk. "You know this conductor used to be very rude. Now suddenly he has changed his bad behavior, "said a middle-aged man.
"Yes, he should be praised and we must write a letter to the company," said a second passenger. "That's right," another lady said, "I wish a newspaper reporter were here so that more people could learn from this conductor.”
Just then a gentleman who looked like a teacher turned to the conductor and said , "Excuse me, but can I know your name, please? Your excellent service must be praised..."
Before he could open his mouth, the three-year-old child sitting on the young woman's lap interrupted, "I know his name. I call him Dad."

Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
25. During the test, those who were tested were given ________.
A. no breakfast at all
B. very rich breakfast
C. little food for breakfast
D. different breakfast or none
26. The results of the test show that ________.
A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies
B. breakfast has little to do with a person s work
C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast
D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast
27. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will _________.
A. lose weight
B. not lose weight
C. be healthier
D. gain a lot of weight
28. According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ___________.
A. he will fall ill
B. he will fail to listen to his teacher
C. he will not make progress in his study
D. his mind will work more slowly

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called "Brownie". My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up one of my Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, "Bad girl," she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.
29. What would Brownie do when someone was ill in the family?
A. Look at them sadly.
B. Play games with them.
C. Keep them company.
D. Touch them gently.
30. Why does the author say that Brownie was more than just a family pet?
A. She was treated as a member of the family.
B. She played games with anyone she liked.
C. She went everywhere with the family.
D. She was loved by everybody she met.
31. Which of the following best describes Brownie?
A. Caring.
B. Polite.
C. Brave.
D. Shy

A jobless man applied for the position of “office boy” at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.
“You are employed,” he said. “Give me your e-mail address and I’ll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.”
The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an e-mail.”
“I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an e-mail, that means you do not exist. And who doesn’t exist cannot have the job. ”
The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do, with only ten dollars in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars.
The man realized that he can survive in this way, and started to go every day earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers(零售商人) in the US.
He started to plan his family’s future and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker(经纪人)and chose a protection plan.
When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his e-mail. The man replied, “I don’t have an e-mail.”
The broker answered curiously, “You don’t have an e-mail, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail?” The man thought for a while and replied, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft!”
32. Why can’t the man have the job at Microsoft?
A. Because he was lazy.
B. Because he didn’t pass the test.
C. Because he didn’t have an e-mail.
D. Because he didn’t have a computer.
33. The underlined word “triple” can be replaced by ______.

I don’t think I need to tell you that reading is good for you — great for you. __36__Sometimes, people do want to read — they’ve got a book at home sitting on the shelf that they fancy — but can never seem to find the time. Well, my friends, this post is for you.

Some people set radical (激进的) goals for themselves like reading one book a week. Obviously, you don’t have to be as radical as that. __38__ It’s all up to you. But setting a goal and trying to reach it gives you a focus that’ll help you get the job done.
●__39__
If you’re determined, use every possible moment. On the bus. On the subway. On your lunch break. When you’re at the gym. You won’t regret it, I promise!
● Just start.
Sometimes the thing preventing us from reading is our own mind. Our mind will make up all kinds of excuses not to do something. Not get out of bed. Not clean the house. Not shower. And in this case, not read. The trick to bypassing (避开) this mental block is to just pick up the book and read! __40__Once you start reading, it’s quite difficult to stop!

There had been a terrible accident on the highway and, for a result, there was a long line of traffic for at least six mile. In the end, we drove to a service station but waited there until the road was clear. In the car park there, Gina nearly knocked over as a car drove out far too quick from behind a lorry. 作文:
Dear schoolmaster,
I’m writing to tell you that all of us are nice to see our newly-built library open. It is so beautiful and well-equipped that we all like to make the most of our spare time here. But there is something we should deal with as quickly as possible.
First of all, there aren’t plenty of seats in the reading-room, so we have to stand reading and thus can’t take notes. Besides, the library is closed at weekends, but in fact, we students have more spare time only at weekends to enjoy reading. What’s more, we don’t know what new books are available.
I suggest that our school library provide more seats and be kept open at weekends. Also, a notice should be put up if there are new books available.
I would appreciate it a lot if you take that into consideration and take some steps to solve them.
