I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience.
25. The author hated to eat alone in the restaurant because of______.

D. had never had such a chance to talk about his worries
27. The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to ______. A. show his love for this restaurantB. teach us a lessonC. share a moving experienceD. recommend a good restaurant
28. What does the underlined word comment in the second paragraph mean?

B. complaint
C. description
D. remark

Your children’s teacher will be providing extra time for test preparation. This school year’s test will be held on January 8 and 9. The test preparation time is open to all students, and we strongly encourage your children to attend.
This year we are changing the time for our test preparation: it will be on Thursday mornings from 8:10 to 8:50. This helps children who ride the bus and cannot stay for the after-school period. It also helps avoid conflicts with after-school activities.
Danielle and Marina will be working with the recent new test takers 6 days on the following Thursdays: 15th, Nov; 29th, Nov; 6th, Dec; 13th, Dec.; 20th, Dec. and 3rd, Jan.
Besides the test preparation lectures on these dates, teachers are already putting test preparation into their usual courses. We are finding that we can help our students to be both skillful and whole-hearted readers and test takers — after all, we all know that the best test preparation is good reading and writing training.
What can you do at home? Again, the best and most effective test preparation for the ELA test is reading and more reading. The research is quite clear — students who do well in the tests are those who are good readers. Reading not only builds reading ability, it also helps build confidence — important for successful test taking! But do discourage your children from spending too much time on books that are too hard or even a bit too hard. Children best develop comprehension skills when they are reading books just right for them (too easy doesn’t hurt here either).
Finally, on Friday, December 7, we will have a morning lecture on the ELA. Please pay attention!
29. The text is intended for________.
A. teachers
B. students
C. parents
D. lecturers
30. Why is the time for test preparation changed?
A. To help the new test-takers have more time to read
B. To make it more convenient for the students to attend
C. To avoid disagreement in time between different years of students
D. To avoid conflicts between preparation time and the usual courses
31. What should parents do at home?
A. encourage their children to read more difficult books
B. make sure their children read more books fit for them
C. discourage their children from reading easy books
D. spend more time reading books with their children
32. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To inform
B. To explain
C. To complain
D. To describe
D
Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form---football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion(激情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with surprise. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their free time.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
33. Why does the author mention some physical activities in the first paragraph?
A. To compare them.
B. To bring up the topic
C. To offer some information
D. To give the readers some advice
34. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because ________.
A. it requires no skills
B. it is too dangerous for climbers
C. it can’t bring people joy and leisure
D. it is free of man-made rule是 for climbers to follow.
35. From the text, we can learn________.
A. a mountain climber needs to have high mental and physical qualities
B. men and women have to suffer hardship only in mountaineering
C. there is no man-made rules in games, such as golf and football
D. mountaineering is not suitable for middle-aged people

During the Spring Festival, some exchange students chose to stay at our school instead of returning home. So the students’ Union decided to organize a New Year get-together, hoping they would feel at home and enjoy their stay here.
The get-together started at 4:00 pm. on February 14, 2018, in Room201 of the Teaching Building. The get-together lasted 3hours. At the get-together, we sang some Chinese songs with the exchange students, and taught them how to make dumplings, which they found very interesting. When eating dumplings, we organized a competition to see how skilled they were at using chopsticks. So amusing! All the students had a wonderful time and had a better understanding of Chinese culture.
