  第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one—it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

  Nike

In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

  McDonald’s

The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch shaped (拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.

  Apple

There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steven Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette (轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.

  Mercedes Benz

The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three- pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie. and DMG in 1926.

  21. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

  A. They are boring. B. They are attractive

  C. They are out of date. D. They are practical

  22. What does Nike’s logo stand for?

  A. The goddess of victory

  B. The source of inspiration for soldiers

  C. The wing of the Greek goddess

  D. The statue of the Greek goddess

We can learn that Apple’s present logo is______.

  A. the religious story of Adam and Eve

  B. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree

  C. a bitten apple with only one color

  D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple

Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?

  A. Nike – McDonald’s – Apple – Mercedes Benz.

  B. Mercedes Benz – McDonald’s – Nike – Apple.

  C. Mercedes Benz – Apple – Nike –McDonald’s.

  D. Nike –Mercedes Benz –McDonald’s – Apple.

  B

It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future.

But the dream didn't last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job --- eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

  25. Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs?

  A. The frogs made too much noise.

  B. They need money to buy medicine.

  C. They wanted to please the visitors.

  D. The frogs were easy money.

  26. What might be the cause of the children's sickness?

  A. The crops didn't do well.

  B. The visitors brought in diseases.

  C. There were too many insects.

  D. The pesticides were overused.

  27. What can we infer(推断) from the last sentence of the text?

  A. Good old days will never be forgotten.

  B. Health is more important than money.

  C. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.

  D. The harmony between humans and nature is important.

  C

  Owls and Larks

Larks are most likely to be healthy, wealthy and wise, according to the old saying. But those who are early to bed and early to rise do not always have the upper hand, researchers say. They have found that night owls are generally brighter and wealthier than those able to get up early in the morning.

Experts from the University of Madrid carried out tests on around 1,000 teenagers and found that those who preferred to stay up late demonstrated the kind of intelligence associated with honored jobs and higher incomes. ‘Larks’ or ‘morning people’, however, often acquired better exam results, possibly because lessons are held at the wrong time of day for night owls. The researchers examined the habits and body clocks of the youngsters to determine whether they liked to stay up late and sleep in later in the morning, or preferred to go to bed early and were at their peak in the morning. School performance and inductive ( 归纳 的) intelligence, or problem solving, were measured and academic grades in the major subjects were also taken into account. The results showed that evening types scored higher than morning types on inductive reasoning, which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and a strong indicator of academic performance. They also had a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically. Such abilities have been linked to innovative thinking, more admired occupations and better incomes.

Famous night owls include President Obama, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Keith Richards and Elvis Presley. George W Bush, who is regularly in bed by 10 pm, Thomas Edison, Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice who wakes at 4.30 am, and Ernest Hemingway are among those known as larks. Jim Horne, professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University, said, “Evening types tend to be the more active and creative types, the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are the deducers (推断者), as are often seen with civil servants and accountants.” A previous study of US Air Force recruits found evening types were much better at thinking to solve problems than larks.

  28. What does the word “owl” mean in the text?

  A. A bird of prey that flies at night

  B. A kind of person who stays up late

  C. A kind of person who gets up early

  D. A bird of prey that is a symbol of wisdom

  29. The following features belong to night owls EXCEPT that_______.

  A. Night owls are much healthier, wealthier and wiser

  B. Night owls stay up late and sleep later in the morning

  C. Night owls have a strong ability of inductive reasoning

  D. Night owls are expert in analyzing and innovative thinking

  30. What’s the author’s attitude towards night owls?

  A. Doubtful.

  B. Objective.

  C. Subjective.

  D. Negative.

  31. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

  A. The early bird will catch the worm.

  B. Morning types have a tendency to do some creative jobs.

  C. Night owls usually do poorer in the examinations than larks.

  D. President Obama and George W Bush are models of night owls.

Downloading music over the Internet is pretty common among high school and college students. However, when students download and share copyrighted music without permission, they are against the law.

A survey of young people’s music ownership has found that teenagers and college students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players.Half of those surveyed share all the music on their hard drive (硬盘), enabling others to copy hundreds of songs at any one time. Some students were found to have randomly linked their personal blogs to music sites, so as to allow free trial listening of copyrighted songs for blog visitors, or adopted some of the songs as the background music for their blogs. Such practices may be easy and free, but there are consequences.

Sandra Dowd, a student of Central Michigan University, was fined US$7,500 for downloading 501 files from Lime Wire, a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Sandra claimed that she was unaware that her downloads were illegal until she was contacted by authorities. Similarly, Mike Lewinski paid US$4,000 to settle a lawsuit(起诉)against him for copyright violation (违反). Mike expressed shock and couldn’t believe that this was happening to him. “I just wanted to save some money and I always thought the threat was just a scare tactic(战术).” “You know, everyone does it,” added Mike.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the organization that files lawsuits against illegal downloaders, states that suing (控告) students was by no means their first choice. Unfortunately, without the threat of consequences, students are just not changing their behavior. Education alone is not enough to stop the extraordinary growth of the illegal downloading practice.

  32. Why is it common for students to download copyrighted music?

  A. They want their friends to know that they are smart.

  B. They don’t think that they will be caught.

  C. They think it is a good way to make some extra money.

  D. They are against copyright protection over Internet music.

  33. What does Mike mean by saying that “the threat was just a scare tactic”?

  A. One should not be afraid of threats.

  B. A lawsuit will result from the threat.

  C. No serious consequence will follow the threat.

  D. It is unfair to scare people with a threat.

  34. What is RIAA’s attitude towards students’ illegal downloading behavior?

  A. They believe that education will help greatly in protecting copyrights.

  B. They profit from the fines illegal downloaders pay for copyright violations.

  C. They like to sue students for downloading music illegally from the Internet.

  D. They think that illegal downloading behavior needs tough measures to correct.

  35. What’s the best title for this passage?

  A. Copyright Violators, Beware!

  B. How to Get Free Music Online!

  C. A Survey of Students’ Downloading Habits

  D. Get rid of Illegal Music Download? Impossible!
