GENEVA, Sept. 26 -- The UN Human Rights Council on Thursday adopted a resolution submitted by China and other countries at its ongoing 42nd session to mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
The resolution stresses the importance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, and decides to convene, during the high-level segment at the UN rights body's next session, a high-level panel discussion to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
Introducing the resolution to the Council Thursday, Chen Xu, head of the Chinese Mission to UN at Geneva, noted that the year 2020 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference of Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which have contributed greatly to the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
Chen hoped that all parties will carry forward the spirit of the Fourth World Conference on Women and reaffirm the common commitment to promoting gender equality and women's development.
