YANGON, Aug. 11 -- The Refurbishment Project for National Indoor Sports Stadium (1) by China was launched in Myanmar's Yangon on Sunday.
"The stadium was formerly constructed by China and now the refurbishment will also be done by China. We appreciate such support and this showcases the concrete and strong friendship between Myanmar and China," Union Minister Dr. Myint Htwe of Health and Sports told the opening ceremony of the project.
Since 1980, China-aided indoor stadium hosted many important sports tournaments, taking part in promoting Myanmar's sports sector development, said Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai.
Chen Hai also added that the stadium would provide modernized facilities after being refurbished.
Meanwhile, Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein expressed wishes for long-lasting bilateral friendship between Myanmar and pledged to pass such friendship culture down to future generations.
Under the bilateral agreement, the refurbishment project will be carried out within two years.
