KAMPALA, Aug. 14 -- Ugandan security agencies have arrested three lawmakers and scores of opposition supporters following a Monday evening attack on the president's convoy in the northwestern district of Arua, a police spokesperson said Tuesday.
Emilian Kayima, Uganda's police spokesperson in a statement said independent lawmakers Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, Gerald Karuhanga, opposition legislator Paul Mwiru and scores of their supporters are being held for obstructing and violently attacking President Yoweri Museveni's motorcade.
Others arrested include Michael Mabikke, former opposition legislator, and Kassiano Wadri, an independent-leaning opposition parliamentary candidate for Arua municipality by-elections slated for Wednesday.
At least two journalists had also been arrested and released on police bond on Tuesday afternoon.
Wadri's supporters on Monday reportedly pelted stones at Museveni's convoy after he left Arua Boma Grounds where he had held the last campaign rally for his ruling party candidate, Nusura Tiperu.
The attackers allegedly smashed the rear windscreen of one vehicle bearing the presidential coat of arms, forcing his security detail to fire in air to disperse the huge crowds, killing at least one person instantly.
"Security officers intervened to contain the situation and they indeed halted it from escalation by use of teargas and shooting," said Kayima.
Kayima said Yasin Kawuma who is reported to be the driver of Kyagulanyi , a musician cum politician, succumbed to a gun shot.
