  第三部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

  第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood.

Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil, make the rain in, and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.

  56. The most important point of trees to man is that ________.

  A. they help him to make money

  B. they give him cool places

  C. they give him wood and other things

  D. they help him to stop drought and floods

  57. In many places forests slowly disappear because ________.

  A. many trees have been cut down by man

  B. new trees are not well looked after

  C. man has not paid enough attention to planting trees

  D. all the above

  58. Land becomes desert after all trees are cut down because ________.

  A. roots of trees break up the soil

  B. there are too many rainfalls to make it

  C. strong winds bring a lot of sand

  D. no trees keep the rain and protect the top-soil.

  59. Which title best fits the passage?

  A. Trees and Man

  B. The Function of Tree Wood

  C. What do People do with Trees?

  D. The Usage of Tree Roots

  B

  1. American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “Hi”. In Britain it is “Hello!” or “How are you?”. “Hi!” is creeping(不知不觉地进入) into British, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, “Glad to know you.” The British say, “How do you do?” or “Pleased to meet you.” When Americans say “Good-bye”, they nearly always add, “Have a good day.” or “Have a good trip.” to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day.”

      2. The British usually use “have got” in the sense of “have”. The Americans hardly ever do.

Am. E: Do you have a car, room, etc.? Yes, I do.

Br. E: Have you got a car, room, etc.? Yes, I have.

Many verbs in American English with “ize” or “izing” forms, e.g. organize, realizing are spelt in Br. E with “ise” or “ising”, e.g. organise, realising. In American English, “practice” is used both for the verb and noun. In Br. E, the verb is spelt “practise”, and the noun “practice.” In American English, one writes “traveler,” while in British English, one writes “traveller”.

  4. It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links (联系) between the two countries are so strong that linguistically (语言上地), and probably culturally (文化上地) too, they are closer together than ever.

  C

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I was not a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to bear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I went to a fairly clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”

Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

  64. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter’s complaint?

  A. He told her not to pay any attention to what her “enemy” had said and just do what she wanted to do.

  B. He criticized (批评) her and told her to overcome her shortcomings.

  C. He told her to write down all her “enemy” had said and pay attention only to the things that were true.

  D. He refused to take the list and want to have a look at it.

  65. What does “Week by week her list grew” mean?

  A. She made a list of my shortcomings and kept on adding new ones so it was growing longer and longer.

  B. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.

  C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.

  D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.

  66. Why did her father listen to her quietly?

  A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s “enemy” said was mostly true.

  B. Because he had been so angry with her daughter and wanted to keep silent.

  .

  C. Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.

  D. Because he was not quite sure which girl was telling the truths.

  67. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?

  A. Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend

  B. The Best Advice I’ve Ever Had

  C. My Father

  D. My Childhood

  D

You never played the video dance game? Now such games are used to help lose weight!

Like many other teenage boys, Jones loves sports. But at 5 feet, 175 pounds, he found his weight in trouble. His doctor wanted him to lose 50 pounds so that he may be a good football game player by the end of the summer.

Jones chose the popular Dance Revolution video game at home to increase his activity. He had lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks’ playing the game, he has lost another 10!

A health study is being done by an insurance company. The company hopes that the game will lead to better health and lower costs. “Obesity claims (肥胖索赔) last year cost us $ 77 million. We have to cut those costs,” said a member of the insurance group. The company provides a game console (游戏主机), a dance mat and software for the six-month, $ 60,000 study.

The study is more than a commercial thing of an insurance company. It is widely supported by physical education and health professionals.

In West Virginia, 43% of the nearly 6,000 children examined for heart disease risk were considered over-weighted; more than 25% were too fat. “We are in a crisis of childhood obesity not only in West Virginia but in America,” said a researcher.

Researchers are now looking at the potential for improving effects by using the game. A teacher in West Virginia has been using the video games in her classes since last fall. She reported that the game does improve heart health as well as eye-hand coordination (协调能力), and her students take the video game as a great alternative to jumping rope or ball games.

The US Education Department is putting the game in 20 schools to control childhood obesity. Well, are you going to try such to dance away your extra weight?

  68. The underlined part is trying to tell us _____.

  A. the study involves many insurance companies

  B. the study is only an insurance company’s business

  C. the study is less important than the insurance company’s money

  D. it’s not only the insurance company that is concerned about the study

  69. It can be inferred that _____.

  A. the government thinks highly of the dance game

  B. in West Virginia, more than 25 % of the adults were too fat

  C. a teacher is a failure in using the video game in her classes

  D. the US Education Department isn’t interested in the game

  70. The most suitable title of the passage is _____.

  A. Dance Away Your Weight

  B. Play the Video Dance Game

  C. Solve the Problem of Obesity

  D. Cut the Cost of Obesity Claims

W: I’m afraid the lower grade students won’t be interested in our activities. I think we should only aim our efforts on students from Grade 4 to Grade 7.

M: Oh, and don’t forget that Grade 5 and Grade 7 students are not allowed to join any school clubs because of the public exams.

W: Yes. Next let’s decide what kind of activities we want to do.

M: Um… I think we should organize film shows after school and organize visits to film studios on some weekends.

  W: That’s great.

M: Good morning, boys and girls. In past years, our school held many competitions successfully, like Singing Competition, Reading Competition, Dancing Competition, etc. I do know most of the students will want to have a reading competition as was held last year. But, now we’ll have something funnier. It’s the Pet’s Competition! Well, in fact, it aims at letting students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people can’t treat animals well. Some people do not think carefully before getting a pet. You will not be disappointed because our teachers will not be using dull theory to put a love of animals in us. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. The competition will be based on the dogs’ ability. Unfortunately this competition is not open to our pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means, we can just sit back and enjoy. So please come to join this event and keep your diary during the activity. How can you afford to miss such an educational and funny event of the year?
