With a growing number of people in San Francisco choosing not to own a car, German car making company BMW has decided to branch out into carsharing services with 70 cars spread around the city, first in 14 locations, with a further 100 being added gradually.$

“This is not an AtoA service—it is AtoB,” says Richard Steinberg, chief executive of the Drive Now scheme(方案), pointing out that members can pick up a car downtown for the halfhour drive to the airport for only $12, compared with about $40-50 for a taxi.

Whether that is possible in real life depends on traffic, of course. A midmorning drive from Union Square down Highway 101 to the airport takes just 22 minutes; however, driving back during the rush hour takes twice as long.

Most of the cars that are stuck in San Francisco’s traffic jams are giving off all sorts of harmful gas. But not Drive Now’s BMW Active E cars.

“All the cars in San Francisco are electric,” Mr Steinberg says.

In San Francisco, handing back the car to Drive Now is easy—just pick one of its dropoff points, park and walk away. There are no forms to fill in, no timeconsuming(耗时的) rules.

Several other carmakers and other players within the motor industry are experimenting with similar schemes, for example Daimler’s Car2go scheme, which is operated in many cities around the world.

“We picture a future where carsharing members outnumber car owners in big cities around the world,”says Car2go spokesman Andreas Leo.

  28. What does the underlined part “branch out into” probably mean?

  A. To start offering.

  B. To try improving.

  C. To make use of.

  D. To take control of.

  29. The Drive Now scheme________.

  A. works better in rushhour traffic

  B. makes city driving less dangerous

  C. encourages people to buy a cheap car

  D. allows drivers to pay money to use a car

  30. What’s special about BMW Active E cars?

  A. They are time-saving.

  B. They don’t get stuck in heavy traffic.

  C. They are environmentally friendly.

  D. They are money-saving.

  31. Which of the following statements is Not True according to the passage?

  A. Some people in San Francisco feel it inconvenient to have a car.

  B. Car2go spokesman Andreas Leo is confident of car-sharing services.

  C. The Drive Now scheme is a quite success.

  D. The competition in car-sharing is fierce.

Boys’ schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.

A US study says that far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (男子气概), the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure.

Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their abilities to express their emotions, rather than feeling they had to obey to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.

The findings of the study are against the received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.

Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being ignored by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.

The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.

“But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom”, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James of the University of Virginia.

Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing in “boy-focused” ways such as themes and characters that interest them. Because boys generally have sharper vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern type in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote.

Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to give in to a stereotype(陈词滥调) that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools boys feel pressed to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.

  32. The author believes that a single-sex school would ____ .

  A. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely

  B. force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men”

  C. help to form masculine aggressiveness in boys

  D. naturally place stress on the traditional image of a man to boys

  33. It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys _____ .

  A. grow up more healthily

  B. perform relatively better

  C. behave more responsibly

  D. receive a better education

  34. According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is _____.

  A. boys can focus on their lessons without being absent-minded

  B. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in

  C. teaching can be designed to improve boys’ team spirit

  D. teaching can be used to suit the characteristics of boys

  35. Which of the following is the characteristic of boys according to Abigail James’ report?

  A. They have sharper vision.

  B. They enjoy being in charge.

  C. They act the same to stereotypes.

  D. They are violent and sexist.

Speaking in public is most people’s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves. 36.________ .

But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It’s just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I’m basically shy (honest!), I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent or being able to draw. 37.________ . Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

Keep it simple. Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty. 38.________ . And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there’s no way your audience will.

Get organized. 39.________ —how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you’re going to close.

When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. 40.________ . A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.

Keep it short. The standard length of a vaudeville act(杂耍) is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing their hearts out couldn’t go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can?

  A. Some people are born to be good at making speech

  B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public

  C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech

  D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become

  E. If you can’t express in a sentence or two what you intend to express, then your speech is not focused well enough

  F. When you know where you’re headed, you can choose any route to get there

  G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you’ve got to get your ducks in a row

  Dear Mr. Bryan,

In order to help us students know more about Western culture, our school is going to hold a talk on foreign festivals in our school hall next Saturday afternoon. I’d like to invite you to give us a talk on Thanksgiving Day. We are to begin at 3pm. Do you think one hour is enough for you to talk about the origin of this festival and the related traditions and culture? I am sure the students will be very interested in your lecture. Please let me know whether you will accept our invitation so that I can make arrangement for it.

  Looking forward to your reply.

听力材料Did you stay up late last night?

M: Yeah. I didn’t go to bed until the football game was over.

  W: Who won the game?

M: Italy was beaten by France.

  Text 2

W: Oh, no! Where are my car keys?

M: Relax. Are they in your purse?

  W: No, they’re not. They’re gone.

M: I bet they’re still on the table in the restaurant.

  Text 3

M: What happened in your chemistry class?

W: It was an accident. One of my classmates broke a bottle of chemical liquid and burnt his hand. Luckily he was sent to the hospital at once. It is not serious now.

  Text 4

M: Hello, Aqua Park. Can I help you?

W: Yes, please. I’d like some information. Are you open on Saturdays?

M: We’re open every day. From nine in the morning until six, but on Saturdays we close much later, at ten.

  Text 5

W: Honey, I need a new pair of shoes.

M: Shoes? Maybe we’ll need to buy another cupboard, too.

W: I know, but I have no shoes to match my new dress.

  Text 6

M: Mum, can you stop using the dust collector? I can hardly hear!

W: You’re been watching that silly series for 2 hours. I really hate to ask, but have you cleaned your own bedroom?

M: Here we go again. What’s the point of asking again and again?

W: If you don’t finish it, no allowance for this week. You’d better finish it before dinner.

  M: OK, I will.

W: And another thing— you ought to know better than to make a mess on the floor.

M: Don’t worry. I’ll clean it up in a minute.

  Text 7

W: Hey, Jim. I didn’t know you biked to work.

M: Yeah, it helps me keep fit and helps the environment, too.

W: One less car on the road means less pollution.

M: Right. Since my work is near a park, it’s a really nice ride, too.

  W: How far is it?

M: Oh, about 10 miles. It takes me about an hour.

W: That doesn’t sound too bad. I wish I could do it, but I work in the city. So I take a two-hour train ride to go to work every day.

M: You’re doing your part for the environment by using public transportation, too.

W: True. Well, see you tomorrow.

  M: See you.

  Text 8

W: I can’t fit into my favorite sweaters anymore. I’m going on a diet.

M: Well, I think you look fine. You shouldn’t worry about it.

W: Are you kidding? Being overweight is a huge disadvantage, especially for women. People will look down on you; it’s difficult to find nice clothes; and sometimes it’s even hard to get a job.

M: All right, that may be true if you’ve really fat, but you’re only slightly overweight.

W: You see, you do think I’m fat. Now, I’m definitely going on a diet, something that’ll work quickly. There’s a new one in this magazine.

M: That’s crazy. Don’t you know that most diets just don’t work? Within a few months over 95 percent of people have put the weight back on.

W: Well, you work out in the gym!

M: Yeah, but that’s for general health and fitness.

W: Sure. But it’s also to build up your muscles so you look better. You can’t deny it!

M: Maybe. I’m not saying that it’s wrong to want to look good. But it is just not necessary to be obsessed with your appearance.

W: Tell me what to do then.

M: Okay, I’ll tell you what, why don’t we go and play tennis this afternoon?

W: That’s a great idea and afterwards we can go for pizza.

M: So you’re interested in a job as a waitress. Um, have you worked as a waitress before?

W: Yes, for three years at several different restaurants. Now I’m working at the Park Hotel dining room on Hill Street.

M: They have a very nice dining room there. Why do you want to leave?

  W: Because I can’t work full-time now. I’m taking some courses at a university.

M: I see. On what days are you free?

W: All day Thursday and Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

M: That suits us very well actually. We’re looking for someone who can help us when we get very busy. That’s Thursday afternoon, Friday afternoon and evening as well as all day Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.

  W: That’s fine with me.

  M: When can you start?

W: Is the first of next month all right with you?

M: That’s fine. The first of May. By the way, you’ll get $8.80 an hour, plus tips, of course.

W: Good. Thank you very much.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are very happy to have Mr. Brown and his party from Australia with us tonight. Let’s give our warm welcome! Mr. Brown is very handsome and what’s more, he is honest and very kind to everyone. He has given much useful advice to us, so we should thank him very much. He keeps words and never breaks his promise, and we all should learn from him. We all trust him a lot. He is really our good friend. Mr. Brown has long been our friend. As one of the largest traders in clothes in Australia, Mr. Brown has been one of our faithful business partners ever since we entered into business relations in 1998. This time Mr. Brown and his party are coming to England to explore new opportunities for business cooperation. We believe that there are many areas in which we can cooperate. Now I advise all of us to drink to the successful visit of our friends. Thank you for coming, dear Mr. Brown. We sincerely hope that you can come here as often as possible. We also hope we can be friends forever.
