WASHINGTON, May 7 -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday congratulated Emmanuel Macron on winning the French presidential election, and looked forward to continuing the U.S.-French cooperation.
"Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France," Trump tweeted.
"I look very much forward to working with him!" he added.
The White House also issued a short statement on Sunday to congratulate Macron for winning the election, while promising to continue the U.S. cooperation with its European ally.
"We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election. We look forward to working with the new president and continuing our close cooperation with the French government," the statement said.
Macron won Sunday's runoff vote of the French presidential election with a big margin, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen, according to polling agency projections issued after the vote.
