  III.阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,计30分)

  A

If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future, I think there will more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operate and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传递)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read.—sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspaper, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screens or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

41.What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Best Way to Get News

  B.The Changes of Media

  C.Make Your Own Newspaper

  D.The Future of Newspapers

42.In the writer’s opinion, in the future, ______.

A.more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news

B.mewspaper will not be printed in publishing houses any longer

C.newspapers will cover more scientific research

D.more and more people will watch TV

43.From the passage, we can infer ______.

A.newspapers will win the competition among the different media

B.newspapers will stay with us together, with other media

C.television will take the place of newspapers

D.the write believe some media will die out

44.The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means ______.

  A.compete with

  B.depend on

  C.fight with

  D.kill off

Charlie, a master carpenter, was very well respected in his community. Everyone knew that if he wanted the best, he should call on him. Of course that meant that Charlie would never be rich. His fellow carpenters always told him that if you used inferior(较差的)materials and cheap labour than you could make a lot of money. Charlie would not hear of it.

One day, John, the richest man in town came to Charlie. He said that he had just bought the piece of land in town. It overlooked the entire city. He was going to Europe for 4 months and wanted Charlie to build him the best house in town. “Spare no expense and give me the best.”

Charlie thought about this and decided finally he would make some money. He did not get his usual great carpenters and fine materials from his normal supplies. He built the house and covered up the flews(瑕疵). After 4 months he spent about 50% of what he usually spent on a house.

John came back from Europe and immediately called Charlie and asked him to meet him at the house. When they met, John asked him if he had used the finest materials and spared no expense. Charlie, then told him that he knew he was not rich and had always struggled. So he wanted to reward Charlie for all of his years of service to the community by giving Charlie this house.

There are many times in our lives where we let down a little bit. When you do, you never know what is going to happen.

Every parent knows it’s important to have good communication with their teens—actual conversations with plenty of back and forth. The problem, of course, is that most teenagers don’t like to talk to their parents. I usually, we’re at fault. We can’t just let them talk. There are far too many important life lessons to impart(传授).

It might go something like this: Jacques and his father are riding in the car. Out of the blue Jacques starts talking.

I’ve been thinking. I don’t know, maybe I’m going to become an airplane pilot. Or maybe I’ll work at Burger Barn and always live at home with you and mom. Or maybe…”

“You know, Jacques, you’re going to have to start thinking seriously about what you want to do. You’re going to be out of high school in a couple years.”

“What is his problem?” Jacques says to himself.” “I was trying to tell him what I’m thinking about, but all he wants to do is to give me another lecture.”

Jacques and his father sit without speaking for the rest of the drive.

Our comments worries, warnings and lessons—they seem important. We want to guide our kids down the best possible path. And if we hear something from them that seems to beg for our important guidance, how can we not give it? But often the only thing that our advice accomplishes is to kill the conversation.

When they talk freely, it is like a tiny flame that we should try to keep alive, fanning it gently to keep it going. When they were little kids, we couldn’t stop them talking, but not much skill is required to get a second grader to tell you about his day.

The solution seems so simple. All you have to do is shut up. Stick to innocuous comments like,” You think so?” or “Really?” or repeat a brief version of what you said.

A.Shut your mouth and listen to your teens.

A.your advice will stop your conversation

B.your child will hare his soul to you

  D.your child will become independent

For many old persons, just walking across a room can consume them of all their energy for the day. In hot weather, they may not even make them out of bed. Learning to conserve energy is not a complicated process, yet it can make a world of difference.

Learning to perform tasks efficiently and to minimize energy expense requires mental organization. Before an elderly person gets up and does something, the needs to stop and think about what else she can do at the same time.

For example, getting dressed in the morning could require several trips to the closet. She should stop and think about all the things she needs to gather from the closet. She should gather them all at once instead of getting clothes out, putting them on, then going and getting a belt and looking for shoes. Going in and out of the closet several times requires a lot of activities and energy: gathering all of the items at one time and dressing in order can take a few simpler steps.

Grooming(梳洗)can be scattered by first brushing her teeth, then getting dressed, then going back to the bathroom and washing her face and combing her hair. They should perform all tasks in one location and then move on to the next area and tasks. Make sure they take a break and rest between tasks. When cooking, they should gather supplies at one time, perform the work, and then put away what is no longer needed. They should cook the food, sit down to eat, and then clear up.

There are many other aspects of energy conversation, including breathing techniques and rest and relaxation tips. Rearranging space such as kitchen-chained contents and household furniture can be helpful in making energy conversation work more efficiently.

52.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Advice on how to conserve energy.

B.Tips on what to do with the elderly.

C.Help to be done for the old people.

D.Daily affairs happening to the elderly.

53.What is the function of the third paragraph?

A.To show how hard an elderly person works.

B.To prove mental organization is effective.

C.To imply elderly persons need timely help.

D.To prove we are into an aged society now.

54.When an elderly person is doing her grooming, she should ______.

A.perform all the tasks in a hurry

B.leave out some of the activities

C.finish all the tasks in one place

  D.groom while making a meal

55.The passage is probably taken from ______.

  A.Journal of Environment and Health

  B.Family Care and Life Magazine

  C.Sports and Environment Magazine

  D.Interview and News Report
