Stonehenge is a place of interest and also a wonder in the world. But no one really knows how or why Stonehenge was built. These circles of giant stone slabs (石板) were placed in a grassy field in southern England nearly 5,000 years ago. Some believe that the rocks served as star clocks. Others think that people used them for religious purposes.
Visitors to Stonehenge can appreciate near and stare at the giant stones, but since 1978 they have been forbidden from walking through or touching the 100-foot-wide circle of stones without special permission. With almost a million people visiting the monument each year, Stonehenge has become surrounded by roads and parking lots. Arguments exist over how exactly to protect the site, with archaeologists(考古学家), religious groups, and tourists all expressing different opinions.
A group which is devoted to protecting historical sites, however, plans to restore Stonehenge to its natural setting. One road will be removed, and another will be routed through an underground tunnel. Today’s parking lots will become open fields, and a new visitor’s center will be built two and a half miles away. So on future trips to Stonehenge, pack your walking shoes or plan on taking a bus to the site.

Nellie was a black child going to a school in Arkansas, in which the students were mostly poor African-American children. Thanks to the aid of a fund, grade one students could enjoy a special reading project: after finishing reading through a book, a child is allowed to take home a book, cassette and walkman on weekends as a reward, so that he or she will have an extra chance of study.
Friday came. Nellie, holding the reward she had won, went home happily. According to the rule, the child should bring back to school the things taken home at the weekend the next Monday.
Nellie didn’t hand them in to school on Monday. When asked why, she said “I…I…I f-o-r-got…” and then fell silent. Three weeks passed but the book, cassette and walkman still didn’t come back.
One day, however, Nellie’s mother came to school with the book, cassette and walkman. She explained to the teacher why Nellie hadn’t brought them back.
“When Nellie came back from school that day and told me that she was learning to read, I simply couldn’t believe, for, you see, before her none of my family was able to read.
“I was very young when I gave birth to Nellie, so I had to give up school. When Nellie read to me the book I was surprised. I asked her how she managed it. She said, ‘It is quite easy. I just follow the teacher in the cassette again and again until I can read myself.’ In the beginning, I didn’t believe her, but I decided to have a try to see if I could also learn to read. That’s why Nellie didn’t return the reading materials.”
She paused and then asked, “May I read to you?”
So in front of her daughter this young mother began reading aloud her daughter’s book to her daughter’s teacher, tears on her face all the time.

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Many people are afraid to support themselves. Dr Robert Albert, author of Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back thinks it' s because their self-respect is low. "There's always ‘superior' around---a parent, a teacher, a boss---who knows better."
But Albert and other scientists are doing something to help people help themselves. They offer "assertiveness training" courses, A.T. for short. In the A.T. Course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people.
In one way, learning to speak out is to get rid of fear. A group taking an A.T. Course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But A.T. uses an even stronger motive--- he need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels. Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-respect. If someone you face is more "important" than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your answers to problems. You can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do you can learn to speak out.
63. The problem the writer talks about is that __________.
A. some people buy things they don't want
B. some people are afraid to speak out for their rights
C. there are too many superiors
D. some people don't think enough of themselves
64. The cause of the problem talked about in this passage is that _________.
A. some people have a low self-respect
B. there is always someone around who "knows better"
C. salesmen talk people into buying things they don't want
D. people don t share enough
65. The A.T. Course often _______.
A. make people distrust their own answers
B. make things more favorable for "superiors"
C. help people know as much as their "superiors"
D. help people become more important
66. A good title for this passage could be "__________".
A. The Need to Share
B. Talk Back When Necessary
C. One Way to Build Self-Respect
D. One Way to Train Speaking Ability
D
English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
67. According to the passage ______.
A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
B. there should be egg in an eggplant
C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
D. boxing rings should be round
68. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?
A. A wise man and a wise guy.
B. Overlook and oversee.
C. Quite a lot and quite a few.
D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.
69. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “______”.
A. blow
B. roll up C. get hurt
D. finish
70. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.
A. clever
B. crazy
C. lazy
D. dull

My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. 1 Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us.
My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. 2 She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.
3 Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. 4 She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.
Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 5 This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.
A. She enjoys listening to classic music.
B. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.
C. She loves her students and cares for them.
D. She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.
E. My mother is hard-working and never wastes money.
F. I never forget it and always bear it in my mind.
G. Can you tell us something about your mother?
