AIt was 11 pm. Donald Lubeck was lying in bed. Outside, lightening lit up the sky, and thunder shook the house. Suddenly he heard the smoke alarm sounding. Lubeck walked down to see what happened; he opened the door to the kitchen, and flames just went out.

The sudden strong wind from the doorway immediately created a large fire from a small one, probably caused by lightening. Lubeck went back to his bedroom to call 911. “I felt safe because the room had a separate stairway,” he explained.

The phone didn’t work, and when Lubeck tried to go down the stairway, he was stopped by a wall of flames. Lubeck realized he was in trouble. His daughter and granddaughters, who lived with him, were away for the night.

Up a hill lived Lubeck’s neighbors, Jeremie Wentworth and his wife. From his house, Wentworth saw the black smoke. He rushed out, and headed towards Lubeck’s house. He knew Lubeck lived in the house.

He dialed 911. on the phone, the 911 worker warned Wentworth not to enter the house. “but I told the worker, ‘Sorry, but I’m going in. I can hear Lubeck shouting 慔elp me!1’ I can’t let myself do nothing in this situation,’” he says. “I went in and shouted, ‘Don, where are you?’ Then I had to run outside to catch my breath.”

After one more try inside the house, he gave up. Then the wind parted the smoke just enough for him to see Lubeck on the second-floor bedroom. But there was no way to get to him. “I finally noticed a ladder(梯子),” says Wentworth. He set it against the wall and pulled Lubeck down. Just seconds later the floor fell down.

Within the year, Lubeck and his family built a new two-story house at the place. Wentworth and Lubeck don’t run into each other often, but Lubeck now knows that if he ever needs help, Wentworth will be there.

  41. Where did the fire start?

  A. He went down a separate stairway.

Before I read Finding Sophie I had read several books about Jewish children, but this book was

about something new to me: children who were on the Kindertransport and what happened to them. The Kindertransport was a special train. It brought children, who were Jewish and living in Germany, to England. England was a much safer country during the war.

I like the main character immediately! Her name was Sophie Mandel. She was fourteen years old for most of the story. Sophie was very brave. Can you imagine leaving your parents when you are only seven years old, and not knowing if you’ll ever see them again? This was what happened to Sophie. She was sent on the Kindertransport to England to live with her mother’s friend, Aunt Em. Sophie was lucky because Aunt Em loved her so much.

You have to concentrate when you are reading Finding Sophie because the story moves back and forth(来回) in time. Sometimes Sophie would think back to special times she had had with her parents. They called her Zoffie in German. The saddest part in the story for me was, as Sophie got older some of the memories of her parents began to disappear and Sophie wanted to stay in England forever with her Aunt Em and her new friends, Mandy and Nigel. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Sophie had a reunion(团聚) with Marianne, who had looked after her on the Kindertransport like a mother.

I wont tell you the ending, but I was happy for Sophie the way things turned out. If you are interested in learning about children’s experiences during the Holocaust(二战时对犹太人的大屠杀), you will enjoy reading this book.

  46. A. B. C. D.. A.’t follow the order of time.

  B. Most of its story happens in Germany.

  C.D..’s life in England?.

  A. B. C. D.

  .

  A. B. C.’t get along well with her parents.

D..’s attitude towards the book Finding Sophie?

  A.

  B.

  C.’s not well written.

  D.’t like the character Sophie.

Since 1909, the doctors, nurses, social workers and other health professionals in the Child and Youth Health’s teams have been working with parents to help children “Start Health and Stay Health.”

We have over 150 locations(站点) all over South Australia where parents, children and young people can find health care, help and advice, and our Parent Helpline and Youth Healthline work 24 hours a day to help South Australian families and young people by providing advice and information over the telephone.

As more people started to use the Internet, we decided to set up the Child and Youth Health website to help people from all over South Australia (and the world).

Like the other Child and Youth Health websites, you will be able to find information and help about being a healthy and happy child on this website.

Dr Kim and Dr Kate say:

●Many of the topics on our sites have been written.

●Over 500 children were surveyed to find out what topics they would like on the Kids Health site.

●All the children topics have been trialed(测试) by children.

●Nearly every drawing is the work of children.

●Children wrote many of the poems.

●We are writing more topics all the tome on all 4 sites as people e-mail us asking for help and advice.

●Many other organizations have linked to our sites because they believe we provide good information that is easy to understand.

●The Child and Youth Health websites have won many prizes.

●If you don’t find the information you want here, you can ask your parents to see if it is on the Child and Youth Health site written for parents—www.cyh.com.

Child Youth and Health has been helping people in South Australia for nearly a hundred years and now, through the Internet, we can help you too, wherever you live.

So letters sent to Santa Claus find their way to the small town of the North Pole deep in Alaska, including those simply sent to Santa. Last year, 120,000 letters arrived from 26 countries, not including the thousands with no return addresses.

Those who have return addresses usually get a reply and a North Pole postmark (邮戳) that has delighted children all over the world for many years. They feel happy to receive Santa’s reply.

Letters arrive all the year around in the town of 1,600, where streets have names such as Santa Claus Lane and Kris Kringle Drive. Around Thanksgiving, they start getting there by the thousands each day as Christmas comes. Even letters without stamps get through, an exception(例外) for the U.S. Postal Service.

In his ten years as a volunteer, Gaborik has seen every kind of wish. There are children who want the latest toys they see on TV. There are children who ask for miracles(奇迹),some wanting their mother back for Christmas or father back from Iraq, even though he died there.

  Worried,

I have received your letter and I’m glad to give you some advice.

First of all, you need to be confident. Only when you have enough confidence, can you improve your writing. Besides, there is no doubt that reading is a good way in which you can build up your vocabulary and open your mind. What’s more, writing as much and often will certainly help you a lot in the end. You will learn to use the words and phrases better and make fewer mistakes. In my opinion, keeping a diary is worth trying. Once you form the habit of writing, you will find it improved one day.

Follow your dream and you’ll find success is just around the corner!

Good luck to you in your writing.
