Recently we’ve had a popular department store open in our area. It’s been the talk of the town for months. On about the third day of the grand opening, I thought I’d stop by to check it out. I noticed right away that the parking area was very busy.
As I was about to exit(退出)my car, a lady was about to enter her car to leave. She was parked on the opposite side of me and there was a four way stop behind our parking areas. As the lady tried to back out to leave, some of the drivers were extremely rude to her. They shouted and beeped their horns(鸣喇叭) at the lady and she had a look of terror(恐惧)on her face. She looked at me and threw up both of her hands as if she didn’t know what to do.
I gestured(做手势) for the lady to put her window down and I told her that she was doing just fine. She smiled and seemed to relax. I then became her rear view mirror(后视镜)as it was hard for her to see behind her while backing out of the parking space. As I watched for safety, she was able to back out enough to drive forward.
At this point, she was smiling broadly! She thanked me many times. I felt that many of the other drivers weren’t sympathetic(同情的) enough toward. I was happy to help that lady. Besides that, who knows, we may have avoided a potential accident with this simple act of patience and kindness.

THE WAY TO READ FAST
Perhaps you have been told about some habits(习惯) which stop a person reading fast and have been strongly asked to break those habits which you might have. Do you still have any of these bad habits Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to these questions:
1. Do you move your lips(嘴唇) when reading silently? 2. Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
3. Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
4. Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you will not have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin(下巴)in one hand, and hold your head still(不动地,静止地). If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance(看一眼) as your eyes travel across the lines of words. 40. You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading ________ . A. to hold a piece of paper between them B. to stop yourself talking to others C. to tell others to be silent D. to feel whether y our lips move or not 41. Museums have changed. They are no longer places that one “should” go but now they are places to enjoy.
At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children’s Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no “Do Not Touch” signs in some other museums in the USA.
More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, operate and experiment so as to discover scientific rules for themselves.
The purpose is not only to provide fun, but also help people feel at home in the world of science. If people don’t understand science, they will be afraid of it; and if they are afraid of science, they will not make the best of it.
One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and spare time. Another cause is the growing number of young people in the population. Many of them are college students or college graduates. They see things in a new and different way. They want art that they can take part in. The same is true of science and history.
The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new and modern museums. In the United States and Canada, there are more than 6,000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago.
43. The directors of the museums have realized _____.
A. the importance of scientific rules
B. people learn best when they look at something
C. visitors prefer to learn from museums
D. the museum needs changes
44. The growing population of young people caused the changes in museums because _____.
A. many of them hope to take part
B. many of them have a new way of thinking
C. many of them are better educated
D. All of the above.
45. The phrase “feel at home” (Para.4) means _______. A. be suitable for a place and look right there B. understand sth. or be familiar with it C. make the visitor relax by being friendly D. look like one’s own home
46. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People learn best in modern museums only in the US.
B. People are encouraged to take part in what they are seeing in modern museums.
C. People are enjoying themselves fully in modern museums.
D. People will understand science better by trying to discover the scientific rules themselves.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows in the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading,writing,and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better they will do it. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,”explained the scientists.
.The main subject talked about in this passage is________.
A.science on learning a second language
B.man’s ability of learning a second language
C.language can help brain power
D.language learning and maths study
4. The underlined word "bilingual'' probably means ______. A. a researcher on language learning B. a person who is good at learning foreign languages C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner
49.We may know from the scientific findings that________.
A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the greater the grey matter density is
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain
D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time
.In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that________.
A.learning a second language is the same as studying maths
B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D.you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language

You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
● Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First set your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 52 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
● Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
● Make good use of your time in class. 53 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
● Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss next day and read that material. 54 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
● Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
● 55 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
A. There are many methods that might help you with your studying.
B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.(娱乐)
C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.
D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
E. Maybe you are an average student.
F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.
G. This will help you understand the next class.

书面表达:
Dear Li Hua,
I’m glad to hear that you want to study abroad in your letter. Here is what I know about what kind of Chinese students are favored in foreign colleges and universities.
As far as I know, the language ability is essential, which helps you communicate with others and makes it easier for you to understand the course. Besides, you should have the ability to adapt quickly to the new environment. What’s more, your interest is valued as well, for it has a lot to do with success. Last but not least, those who are willing to shoulder social responsibility are especially respected and welcomed.
This is some of my advice, and I hope it can be of some help to you. May you succeed! Best wishes and good luck.
Yours,
Mike
