SeaWorld Orlando has a new attraction. It exhibits nearly 250 penguins(企鹅). During my visit to SeaWorld Orlando, I talked with a bird expert(专家), Anita.

  TFK:

Why did SeaWorld want to make an exhibition about penguins?

  ANITA:

We’ve had penguins since 1987. But we wanted to build a great new exhibition where the guests can see the penguins up close and hear them. In the old exhibition you were separated by glass, so you couldn’t really hear them. So this is a whole new experience.

  TFK:

How are the penguins cared for?

  ANITA:

We go and mainly observe them with our eyes and our ears. If one is sleeping more than normally or seems squinty-eyed(斜视眼), we might have a vet(兽医) check on them. We also feed them every day with restaurant-quality fish. We feed them in the water so that they re feeding naturally.

  TFK:

In their lifetime, what trouble does the penguin have?

  ANITA:

In their lifetime, penguins face predators(食肉动物), which they don’t have here at SeaWorld. There are large ocean birds that would feed on the eggs or the chicks of penguins, as well as whales and sea lions.

  TFK:

The ice in Antarctica (南极洲)is rapidly melting. What effect does this have on penguins?

  ANITA:

As the water warms up, the fish that normally live in that cold water don’t survive, or they move on, but the penguins really want that cold. So as global warming heats up. They really have no place to go since that is the coldest place on the Earth.

  TFK:

How is SeaWorld helping to increase awareness(意识)about climate change?

  ANITA:

Just be aware of your environment around you. Especially in the ocean, any animal can eat the plastic in the environment. It makes them sick and some of them die from it because they can’t digest(消化)it. So just getting up on the beach, just cleaning the environment up, and just paying attention to what’s happening around you.

Members of a high school class of 1943 finally got the party they should have had 70 years ago. Their senior celebration was stopped by World War II.

Anthony Pegnataro, the 1943 class monitor of James Hillhouse High School, remembers the attack on Pearl Harbor(珍珠港) like it was yesterday. On December 7, 1941, Pegnataro said, he and his friends were skating when they heard over the radio that America had entered a state of war.

Going to war meant no party any more. Pegnataro’s carefree(无忧无虑的) high school life suddenly came to an end.

“Most of us went right into the service after graduation,” Pegnataro said. “We graduated in June and were in the army in July.”

Of the 1,585 students at James Hillhouse High School, less than 300 are still alive today and many of them never made it back from war.

Pegnataro, who is now 87, decided that along with their 70-year class reunion, they would also hold the party they never got to have. About 70 people from around the country came to dance on Sunday.

“It was excellent. Everyone there just had great time,” Pegnataro Said. “Those who came guessed it might be their last one.”

Pegnataro said he was on cloud nine to bring his wife of 83 years back to the party, and he introduced her to each of his classmates. “Everyone was very excited at the party. Though we had been separated for so many years, the war brought my class closer together,” he said.

M: I’m afraid the chicken has gone bad.

W: That’s strange! I just bought it the day before yesterday.

M: ⑧Well, I forgot to put it in the refrigerator.

W: Good for you! Now what should we eat?

M: Why don’t we eat out?

W: Again? ⑨Weren’t you just complaining that it’s too expensive to eat out?

  M: Not when you’re hungry.

  M: Good morning.

W: Good morning. Can I help you?

M: Yes, are there any tickets left for the Chinese Music Concert on the 28th, please?

  W: Just a moment, please. No, I think you’ve made a mistake. It’s on the 30th.

M: Really? ⑩I’ve read about it in the paper today. I’m sure it said the Chinese Music Concert is on the 28th.

W: Oh, sorry, I thought you said the Japanese Music Concert. (11)The Chinese Music Concert is on the 28th at 7:15 pm. But I’m afraid there are only back seats left, (12)and they are 30 yuan each.

M: That’s Ok. Can I have two, please?

W: How would you like to pay for these?

  M: Check. Here you are.

W: Thank you. And here are your tickets.

  M: Thank you very much.

  Text 9

W: (13)Why weren’t you at the German class last night, Tom? Have you given up?

M: Well, no…I came back late yesterday and found John sleeping in the chair. He’d been writing reports all day long and he was too tired to go out again, so we gave the lesson a miss.

W: You’ve missed quite a lot of the lessons lately, haven’t you? (14)Are you losing interest?

M: (14)Yes, I’m afraid so. Neither John nor I have a gift for languages. People just laugh at us when we attempt to speak German. How did you and Jane pick it up so quickly and easily? You’ve hardly been in Germany a month.

W: It was neither quick nor easy. (16)We’d both studied the language before we came, and we only needed to revise it.

M: Anyway, all our friends here speak English very well, so we don’t really need to learn German.

  Text 10

W: My name is Julie and (17)I’m a nurse. (18)I work in a school to make sure that children are healthy and happy and able to learn. I work with parents, teachers, family doctors, health-care and many others to offer advice (19) and support to families on things like healthy eating, difficulties with sleep and behavior. I enjoy my job (20) because I love being with children. They don’t feel sorry for themselves for long when they’re not well. They’re honest about how they feel and fun to be with. When children are ill, or when they’re sad because something’s wrong at home, it makes me sad, too. But there’s usually something I can do to help. If I can’t help, I know lost of people who can.
