第三节.阅读理解(每小题2分)
A
I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question—what is a good person?
At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students—a young man of about thirty—described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his five-year-old son were decorating the Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.
So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him, “Give him one of your toys.” At the words, the little boy quickly picked up some toy, and his father said to him, “No, no-give him your favorite toy.”
I think I have got the answer to the question.

“Failure is not an option (选择)” is a very well-known saying. But my father told me that “failure has a time line”.
You have to know that my father was a true genius (天才).He designed the first jet fighter plane the U.S. Air Force had back in 1954,the F84.
You also have to know that his only son is anything but a genius. I was born in 1941,and I am still here at 68 years old. I graduated from Point Loma High in San Diego on June 15,1960,and I was “pleased” with being in the top 10% of the lower one third of my class of about 300 students. Well,at least I graduated! At the time I was very discouraged at my career plans after serving two years in the Peace Corps in Gabon,West Africa, and some time with Air America in Vietnam. I said to my Dad,“Dad,you know I’ve been a failure at everything I’ve tried in life and I just don’t know what to do now.” My dad looked at me with those “genius eyes” and said to me,“Failure is a relative (相对的) thing. It has a time line! Now just remember that failure is not an option...IN THIS LIFETIME!”He then explained to me that failure is part of a successful path, and that I should always keep in my mind that time, failure and success all work together.
To this very day,I still love, respect, and honor my dad and my mom. Maybe some day I will “grow up” and be as smart as my dad was.

How to Overcome the Sense of Failure
In the modern society, failure can be made to feel like the worst thing that could have ever happened to a person. The fact is that failure is common. In this article, you’ll learn a little about how to overcome failure through having the right attitude.
Expect mistakes.
71
To expect life to be always smooth (顺利) is not practical. Failure helps to create balance in your life and presents an opportunity for personal growth. Accept the fact that things won’t always go your way. Learn to love finding out that you’re wrong about something. That’s not failure; it’s the path to finding the right way.
72
Whatever you’re feeling about a failure, keep cool. Look at it this way --- it won’t make any difference to the result itself whether you blow your top or stay calm, but it will take a lot less energy if you choose the latter response. If you’re really angry, channel these emotions to motivate yourself to start again.
73
It’s not good to bottle up feelings, but you can’t take out your anger on those around you for no good reason. Go for a run or a swim to give yourself space to think. Just do something to distract (使分散注意力) yourself from the strong feelings until you calm down.
74
Not only will your failure soon be yesterday’s news, but if you think other people are judging you, it won’t be long before they’re busy worrying about their own failures. After all, everyone is going to fail now and then. So does it really matter what others think?
Stop worrying, start laughing. The sun will come up again tomorrow. Things might be terrible for a little while but how will worrying help? Think back to a time when you worried a lot.
75
Most likely not, apart from giving you more wrinkles (皱纹) and gray hair. The greatest thing you can do for yourself during failure is to use humor.
A. Remain calm.
B. Don’t take your anger out on others.
C. Life’s hard knocks are as common as life’s successes.
D. Forget about how other people view you.
E. Focus on trying again.
F. Did it make any difference?
G. It is a good thing to set out to do something that you know will fail.
