  第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每题2分,共30分)

  A

Science can't explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.

Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband or wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people— half of them pet owners —while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband or wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.

  56. What does the text mainly discuss?

  A. What pets bring to their owners.

  B. How pets help people calm down.

  C. People's opinions of keeping pets.

  D. Pet's value in medical research.

  A. he has a pet companion

  B. he has less stress of work

  C. he often does mental arithmetic

  D. he is taken care of by his family

  58. According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing difficult tasks?

  A. They have lower blood pressure.

  B. They become more patient.

  C. They are less nervous.

  D. They are in higher spirits.

  59. The research mentioned(提到) in the last paragraph reports that________.

  A. people with dogs did more exercise

  B. dogs lost the same weight as people did

  C. dogs liked exercise much more than people did

  D. people without dogs found the program unhelpful

  C

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our town.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

  63. The writer of the passage thinks that _______.

  A. education can settle most of the world’s problems

  B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world

  C. free education won’t help to solve problems

  D. all the social problems can’t be solved by education

  A. our society needs all kinds of jobs

  B. our society needs free education for all

  C. a farmer is more important than a professor

  D. work with hands is the most important

  65. The passage tells us about _______ of the education.

  A. the means

  B. the system (系统)

  C. the value

  D. the type (类型)

  Money Matters

Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It’s important to show your child how money is traded for the things that he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员).

  67

When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

  2. Money lessons

Approach(着手处理) money lessons with openness and honesty.

  68

If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”

  3.

  69 _

Begin at the grocery(杂货) store. Pick out similar brands(品牌) of a product—a name-brand butter and a generic(无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money.

70 __ If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase(购买) with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

  A. Wise decision.

  B. The value of money.

  C. Permit the child to choose between them.

  D. Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things. .

  E. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.
