  四:阅读理解(30分)

  A

I live in a very over populated beach area in the Los Angeles, and I love the beautiful scenery! But because of many people, lots of things are easy to be out of order, and sometimes it’s also easy to lose your cool. Today was a day I wish I did not get out of bed. I mean that if I did not have to wake up and deal with all the things that I deal with on a daily basis, it would have been wonderful.

I had a cup of coffee this morning and that was my meal for breakfast, not healthy I know. Anyway, my stomach was sounding like a truck. So, I jumped in my car and decided to buy some food.

I was in line at Taco Bell (一家墨西哥速食店) and the line was like a long snake! Finally I got to place my order, but a young girl in nice clothes pulled in and was stuck in such a way that unless I moved for her, she wouldn’t be able to get out. So I backed up and waved her into my place in the front of the line.

To my surprise, this young girl did not say thanks. I was cool with it because I thought that I had done something nice for a change. After the girl received her food and pulled away, I pulled into the ordering spot, not mad, but hungry, and the employee said, “Hi, that girl just paid for your food.”

That food was the most satisfying nourishment (营养品) my body had ever taken! If just by chance you are that person who bought my food, I should say “Thank you!”

Whales, like dolphins, belong to a group of mammals (哺乳动物) called “cetaceans”. This name comes from a Latin word meaning “large sea animal”. There are at least seventy-five kinds of cetaceans. Scientists divide the various kinds into two major groups — baleen whales, which do not have teeth, and toothed whales, which have teeth.

Whales have the same basic shape as fish, but they differ from fish in many ways. The most noticeable difference is the tail. Fish have vertical (垂直的) tail fins(鳍), but whales have horizontal tail fins. Fish breathe by means of gills (腮), while whales have lungs (肺) and must come to the surface to breathe. But they can hold their breath for long periods.

Like other mammals, whales give birth to live young and feed them with milk produced by the mother’s body. Most fish, however, lay eggs and do not feed their young. Whales are also warm-blooded — that is, their body temperature remains about the same all the time. Almost all fish are cold-blooded. Their body temperature changes with changes in the temperature of the water.

Whales have a highly developed brain and they are highly advanced life forms. They sing to their young, engage in complex family relationships, and their communication skills are fine.

In December 2005, a whale, after being rescued from fishing nets, didn’t just swim back to deep water. It hung around and touched each of the divers with its mouth. “Knowing that it was free, it stopped about a foot away from me, pushed me around a little bit and had some fun,” said dive master James Moskito. He thought it was “one of the most fantastic moments” of his life.

  B. Whales have tail fins.

  C. Whales feed their young with milk.

  D. A whale’s body temperature nearly doesn’t change.

  62. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?

  A. How whales catch their food.

  B. How whales live in the ocean.

  C. The differences between whales and fish.

  D. Whales are highly advanced life forms.

  63. Why didn’t the whale swim back to the sea after it was saved?

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been scolded for killing farm animals. They are officially regarded as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunters hunt a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs finally catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who object to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突)between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their support. A labor Party Member of the Parliament , Mike Foster , is trying to get parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal (非法的). If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

64 Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes ______________.

Moods(情绪), say the experts, are feelings that are likely to become fixed, having effects on one’s outlook (世界观) for hours, days or even weeks. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry, or simply lonely.

Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, however, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药理学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂) and anti-anxiety(抗焦虑) medicines. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug methods to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as medicines, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug store but try the following methods.

“Of all the mood changing self –help techniques, aerobic exercise(有氧运动)seems to be the best cure for a bad mood. If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits,” says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.

Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise more effective than drug as a mood- raiser. Physical work such as house-work, however, does little good. The key is aerobic exercise---running, cycling, walking, swimming, or other repetitive activities that increase the heart rate and circulation, and improve the body’s use of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a time, three to five times a week. 67. It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.

  A. when one is in a bad mood, he or she may not work very well.

  B. the best way to overcome a bad mood is to talk to oneself.

  C. some drugs are more effective than physical exercise.

  D. taking drugs is at the risk of being harmed.
