It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspaper. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.
Herpin died at the age of 94.

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)
[1] Sound sleep is as important as a healthy diet and exercise, and yet millions of people have sleep problems. How you prepare for sleep and how you feel before going to sleep can influence the quality of rest you achieve. Here are some important tips to keep in mind which can help you sleep better.
2] Keep a regular bed and wake time schedule. Go to bed at the same time every night. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you don‟t toss and turn in bed. Try not to break this routine on weekends when it may be tempting to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day. As with your bedtime, try to maintain your regular wake–time even on weekends.
[3] Keep your room dark and cool. When it‟s time to sleep, make sure that your environment is dark. Even very weak lights---especially those from TV or computer screens----can confuse the body clock. Heavy shades can help block light from windows, or you can try an eye mask to cover your eyes. The temperature of your bedroom also affects sleep. A bedroom that is too hot or too cold can affect quality sleep.
[4] Turn off the TV. Many people use the television to fall asleep or relax at the end of the day. You may even have a television in your bedroom. However, television actually stimulates the mind, rather than relaxing it. Part of this is due to the content. Late night news and other shows frequently have distudisturbing violent material.
[5] Exercise contributes to restful sleep if it is done several hours before you go to bed.
Exercise can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly as long as it‟s done at the right time. Try to finish exercising at least three hours before bed or work out earlier in the day.
