A few years ago, I felt like a true failure. I was doing Weight Watchers for the third time in order to lose weight but not making progress.
At that time, I spent hours every day working out to my videos and was still overweight. I decided that there was no point in fighting it. I thought I was meant to be fat forever. I needed a change of heart and mind. That change came in the most unexpected way. It came with running.
After dinner on Thanksgiving, I went out for a walk with my family. I had put my little MP3 player on and was enjoying the music when my favorite song came on. I felt like dancing, but that was out of the question(I had two teenagers with me). So I picked up the speed a bit and started to run slowly. I was quite pleased with my burst of activity.
What was more surprising is that I got up the next morning and went out again. After running, I felt strong and calm at the same time. I recalled the good feelings I felt when I used to run 20 years ago and decided that I wanted more of that. I signed up for a spring race and practiced hard for it.
Even though my weight is still higher than I would like, I no longer care about it. I try to stay more focused on my life. Most importantly, my workouts are less than an hour per day and I take Sundays off completely. The goal for me is to keep exercising in my life but not let it take over my life. Four out of ten parents in the UK spend between £100 and £500 on their children’s birthday parties, according to a survey. Four in ten parents of children under 18, who were questioned in a survey, admitted that they felt pressured into organizing more expensive birthday parties for their children than they would like to.
How much parents spend on their children’s birthday parties is one of the most frequently discussed topics on parenting websites. Here is one comment on Mumsnet summing up the thoughts of many parents:揥here we live everyone hires places, entertainers and so on.
I don’t want to compare with my rich neighbors, but I want my son to have what all his classmates have.”
The research was carried out on behalf of the children’s charity, Lumos, set up by the author JK Rowling. Just 13 percent of parents spent £50 or less in the past year on their children’s parties.
Many children’s clowns(小丑) or entertainers charge £150 or more for an hour, and parents often feel it necessary to book a special place. Even without these, the cost of plates, the cake and party bags can mount up. Party Pieces, a company set up by Carole and Michael Middleton, charge about £16 for a birthday cake for a party with 16 guests, £22 for table decorations and up to £48 for party bags.
Many children of famous people have increasingly expensive parties, often seen in famous magazines. Suri Cruise, the daughter of actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, enjoyed a £100,000 birthday party according to a report.
Georgette Mulheir of Lumos, said,“Parents in the UK are under increasing pressure to spend more and more money on birthday parties for their children and their children’s friends.”

The development of the English language took a big step nine years before the death of William Shakespeare. Three small British ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1607. They landed in an area that would later become the southern American state of Virginia. They began the first of several British colonies(殖民地).
In time, people in these new colonies began to call areas of their new land by words borrowed from the native people they found living there. For example, many of the great rivers in the United States are taken from American Indian words. The Mississippi, the Tennessee, and the Missouri are examples.
Britain had other colonies in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and India. The English language also became part of these colonies. These colonies are now independent, but English is still one of the languages spoken there. And the English language grew as words from the native languages were added. For example, the word搒hampoow” for soap for the hair came from India. “Banana” is believed to be from Africa.
Experts cannot explain many English words. For hundreds of years, a dog was called a “hound”. The word is still used but not as commonly as the word揹ogi”. Experts do not know where the word “dog” came from or when. English speakers just started using it. Other words whose origins(起源)are unknown include “fun”,“bad”, and “big”.
English speakers also continue to invent new words by linking old words together. A good example is the words “motor” and “hotel”. Many years ago, someone linked them together into the word “motel”.
People often ask how many words there are in the English language. Well, no one really knows. The Oxford English Dictionary lists about six hundred fifteen thousand words. Yet the many scientific words not in the dictionary could increase the number to almost one million.
36. The development of the English language took a big step because _________.
A. many people came to Britain from other nations
B. William Shakespeare invented many new words
C. it started borrowing words from British colonies
D. British people tried their best to change the language
37. Where was the word搒hampoo_” first used?
A. In Britain
B. In India
C.In America
D.In Africa
38. What do we know about the words揹ogp”,揻uns”,揵ads”, and揵igs”?
A. Where they were first used is unknown.
B. They are not used as commonly as before.
C. They were first used in Britain before 1607.
D. They were invented by British people.
39. The underline word “motel” in Paragraph 5 shows that _________.
A. different English words may mean the same
B. inventing new words is difficult for British people
C. the number of English words is increasing day by day
D. some English words were made by linking old words together
40. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why the English language has so many words.
B. Why English has more words than people think.
C. The total number of words in the English language.
D. The number of the unknown words in the English language.

The history of email is older than the Internet. It was not really invented but developed from simple beginnings. Email messages at first were not sent; they were left behind like leaving a note on someone’s desk. This message would be easily seen by the user when logged on.
The first email system of this type was called MAILBOX. It was used in 1965 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. SNDMSG was another early program that could send messages on the same computer. Thus before the arrival of the Internet, email messaging was only done with the same computer. When the Internet was developed, the problem at the time was sending the message to the right person. While the computers could recognize and talk to each other, identifying(证实) a particular person to receive the email message was not simple at all.
Addressing the email message was invented in 1972 by Ray Tomlinson. He chose “@”from the keyboard for denoting(标明) sending messages from one computer to the other. Since then, using the Internet to send an email message has been simple. Other email features such as labeling(标记) and sorting email in folders for his boss for sorting his email; it was a big step forward. Later, John Vital developed a software in 1975 for organizing email.
It was difficult to connect to the Internet and make replies. Offline readers helped a lot to solve his problem. It allowed users to store their email on their personal computers, then read them and prepare replies without being connected to the network. This is similar to today’s Microsoft Outlook.
41. We know that the earliest email messages were _________.
A. not sent but left behind on a computer
B. sent among several computers
C. not easy to be seen by the computer user
D. often read by the user without being logged on
