I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen. It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him into the pool. I made quite a habit of doing this with boys of my own size or less.
One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool. He was no bigger than I was, so I thought him a fair game. Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in, holding on to his towel so that it would not get wet, I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by fierce strokes(猛力的划) to the shore. I run away, but in vain. He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool. I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of younger boys. “Do you know what you have done?” they said, “It’s Amery; he is in Grade Six. He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”
I was frightened and felt ashamed, “How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small?” He didn’t seem pleased at all, so I added in a cleverest word, “My father, who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about my rude behavior and how I had better be careful in the future, meant the incident was closed.
56. The writer thought Amery “a fair game” because the boy _________
A. looked like an animal
B. was fond of games
C. was of similar size to himself
D. was good at sports
57. The writer felt ashamed because _________

C. Amery was a student in Grade Four.
D. Amery forgave the writer for his rude behavior.

Do you love holidays but hate the increase of weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.
Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints(薄荷) and fruits. They don’t have fat content as cream and chocolate.
Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra calories.

Does it matter if you get enough sleep? Of course! Not only does the quantity of your sleep matter, but the quality of your sleep is important as well. People whose sleep is interrupted a lot might not get enough sleep. In other words, how well you function the next day depends on your total sleep time.
Performance: We need sleep to think clearly, react quickly, and create memories. In fact, the pathways in the brain that help us learn and remember are very active when we sleep. Studies show that people who are taught mentally challenging tasks do better after a good night’s sleep. Other research suggests that sleep is needed for creative problem solving.
Mood: Sleep also affects mood. Lack of sleep can make you easy to get angry and is linked to poor behavior and trouble with relationships, especially among children and teens. People who lack sleep long are also more likely to become unhappy.
Health: Sleep is also important for good health. Studies show that not getting enough sleep increases the risk of having high blood pressure, heart disease, and other medical conditions.
In addition, during sleep, your body produces valuable hormones(荷尔蒙). Deep sleep causes more release of growth hormone, which increases growth in children, and helps build muscle mass and repair cells in children and adults. Another type of hormone that increases during sleep works to fight various infections. This might explain why a good night’s sleep helps keep you from getting sick—and helps you recover when you do get sick.
Hormones released during sleep also affect how the body uses energy. Studies find that the less people sleep, the more likely they are to be overweight, to develop diabetes.
63. How many aspects mentioned in the passage are affected by sleep?
A. One
B. Two
C. Three
D. Four
64. The following sentences are right EXCEPT that _________
A. you function well the next day if you sleep well
B. the quantity of sleep matters but the quality doesn’t
C. people are more likely to become unhappy when lacking sleep
D. sleep is important for good health
65. How does good sleep affect children’s growth?
A. During sleep, body produces hormones which increase growth in children
B. Deep sleep reduce the energy the body uses
C. Hormones stop the body from developing diabetes.
D. Hormones increase the risk of having high blood pressure.

▲__67__ About 35 percent of all adults have diabetes or prediabetes, and most people with prediabetes don’t know it. If you’re over 45, have family members with the disease, and can grab a handful of fat on your belly, ask your doctor about getting a blood-sugar test.
▲ Operations can help. If you have type 2 diabetes and can’t get your blood-sugar numbers down, the most reliable treatment is an operation. And I say that even though I usually recommend lifestyle changes first! __68__ If you’re five foot three and 200 pounds—or five foot ten and 240—you are suitable.
▲ We know the worst diet. It turns out that blood-sugar levels stay high longer after starchy(淀粉的)or sugary meals that are also high in fat. The Ornish diet says: don’t eat fat with your carbs (碳水化合物). The Atkins diet says: don’t eat carbs with your fat. They may both be right. __69__ Neither one alone is dangerous, but together, they can cause serious damage to people. This explains why so many different kinds of diet can help with diabetes. __70__.

Dear Lora,
I’m glad to receive your letter. You asked me something about how to make friends. The following is my advice.
Everyone needs friends, so how to make friends is very important. To make friends, first you must be friendly to others. A smile is like a magnet that draws people. Then, look after others more than yourself. Try to make strangers feel easy wherever they are.
Try to remember others' names, which will make them feel that they have made an impression on you. If you have different opinions, you can discuss them with others. Please don't quarrel with them. Finally, don't trust those people who leave you when you are in trouble, because a friend in need is a friend indeed.
I hope everything goes on well with you and you'll make lot of good friends.
Yours,
Li Hua
