HOW TO QUIT SMOKING
When thinking about quitting (giving up)…
List all the reasons why you want to quit. Every night before going to bed, repeat one of the reasons 10 times.
Decide positively that you want to quit. Try to avoid negative(消极的) thoughts about how difficult it might be. Develop strong personal reasons in addition to your health and obligations(责任) to others. For example, think of all the time you waste taking cigarette breaks, rushing out to buy a pack, hunting for a light, etc. Set a date for quitting — perhaps a special day like your birthday or a holiday. If you smoke heavily at work, quit during your vacation. Make the date sacred seriously, and don’t let anything change it. Begin to condition yourself physically; start a modest(适度的) exercise; drink more water; get plenty of rest.
Immediately after quitting…
The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking is prohibited(forbidden), e.g. libraries, museums, theatres, departments stores, etc.
Drink large quantities of water and fruit juice. Try to avoid wine, coffee, and other drinks which remind you of cigarette smoking.
Strike up a conversation with someone instead of a match for a cigarette.
If you miss the sensation(感觉) of having a cigarette in your hand, play with something else-a pencil, a pen or a ruler.
If you miss having something in your mouth, try a toothpick or a fake(仿制的) cigarette.

The opera house in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the most beautiful in the United states. It is small and open, with one roof over the stage where singers perform and another roof over part of the audience. This opera house in the mountain is one of the best in the country, which may seem surprising because performances are only given during the seven weeks in summer, and because Santa Fe is a very small city.
One reason why the Santa Fe Opera is so good is that it attracts many excellent young singers. They all hope to sing in famous opera houses like Metropolitan in New York someday, and they work hard to become well-known during the summer. The musicians and directors are experts who come from the best orchestras(管弦乐队) and operas in the country during their vacations. They enjoy working there because they like to live in Santa Fe, which is near both the mountains and the desert. It is very beautiful there in summer.
The state government of New Mexico advertises the Santa Fe Opera in newspapers all over the country, and a great many tourists come to New Mexico because of the opera. Still, most of the audience does come from Santa Fe and other nearby cities, and all the seats in the theater are sold for every show.
There is only one thing that some people do not like about the Santa Fe Opera, and that is the cold weather. Because the theater is open, performances cannot start before it gets dark at nine o’clock in the evening, and then the mountain air becomes very cool. Sometimes people complain about the cold air, but because the operas are good, these people come back again wearing warm coats.
59. This passage mainly introduces _______.
A. a mountain city
B. young musicians
C. an opera house
D. the tourism in Santa Fe
60. Young singers come to perform in Santa Fe Opera because _______.
A. the music quality is high
B. they enjoy the climate there
C. they want to be famous
D. they like the scenery there
61. It seems surprising that Santa Fe becomes famous because _______.
A. it is only a very small place
B. it is between the mountain and desert
C. all the seats are sold for every show
D. musicians there are from the best orchestras
62. From the passage, we can learn that _______.
A. the opera house is open without any roofs
B. musicians always spend vacations in Santa Fe
C. the government advertises to attract more musicians
D. performances are held in Santa Fe only after it is dark

In 1901,H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the“moon people”they met. In turn, the搈oon people攅xpressed their surprise.揥hy,攖hey asked,揳re you traveling to outer space when you donge, w’t even use your inner space?? H.G.Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the搈oon people攁sked is stillthe an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The“Channel”,a tunnel connecting England and France, is now complete.
But what about underground cities? Japan’s Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called“Alice Cities”.The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth’s space. The space, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H.G.Wells“moon people”would agree. Would you?
63.The explorers in H.G.Well’s story were surprised to find that the“moon people”
.
A.knew so much about the earth B.understood their language
C.lived in so many underground cities D.were ahead of them in space technology

C.Meeting the“moon people”again D.Traveling to outer space
65.What sort of underground system are already here with us?
A.Offices, shopping areas, power stations
B.Tunnels, car parks, shopping areas
C.Gardens, car parks, power stations
D.Tunnels, gardens, offices
66.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Alice Cities—cities of the future B.Space travel with H.G.Wells
C.Enjoy living underground D.Building down, not up

In 1841, a book was published which astonished the world. It was called“Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan”The author John Loud Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forest of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had once been there with Frederick Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilization known as the Mayas(玛雅).Very little was known about the Mayas at that time, but Catherwood’s drawing in the book showed incredible cities with temples, pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neighbors, the Aztecs. These cities, however, were deserted. The inhabitants(居民)had disappeared almost a thousand years before.
Since that time, far more has been learned about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate(精确的)system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers capable of moving huge blocks stone long distances and cutting them to accurate shapes and sizes.
And yet although the Mayas knew about the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more surprising is that they suddenly abandoned(抛弃)many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD900, Mayan civilization collapsed. By the year 1200, their last great capital, Chichen Itza, was deserted.
Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped? What brought about their sudden and mysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first Europeans appeared off their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.
67.Stephen’s book astonished the world because

C.he had experienced so many difficulties to find this lost civilization
D.it described that the Mayas used to be an advanced civilization

.
A.they developed accurate system measuring time
B.they knew how to build pyramids with stones
C.they deserted their cities and moved to new ones
D.they built cities which they never lived in
69.At last Mayas disappeared from the world most probably in
.
A.a thousand years before 1841 B.around AD 900
C.any year between 1200 and 1517 D.1200
70.What brought about Mayan sudden collapse?
