A.
When was the last time someone did something unexpectedly nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It's happened to me a few times, but two examples really stand out.
A few years ago, I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't his company that disappointed me. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship.I could have burst into tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said, "Your meal was already paid for." My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye.He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, "Yes, the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you."
Just last year, I was running a half-marathon.With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas.Runners call it "hitting the wall"; I thought I couldn't move another muscle.Out of nowhere, a teenager jogs up next to me and says, "What's your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let's go! Come on! It's just around the corner! You can do it!" And he ran with me until I picked up my pace.I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day. Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ball-game, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa, talking? What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?
Betty shrugs. Talking? We’re friends.
Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked (明显的) and unmistakable.”
More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife / husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in times of emotional distress (感情危机). “Most women, says Rubin, “identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends whom they could turn to in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”
“In general,” writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions(互动) between men are emotionally controlled — a good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior”.
“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. While a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.” 51. What Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that __________.
A. he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband
B. women have so much to share
C. women show little interest in ball-games
D. he finds his wife difficult to talk to 52. Rubin’s study shows that for emotional support a married woman is more likely to turn to __________.
A. a male friend
B. a female friend
C. her parents
D. her husband 53. According to the text, which type of behavior is NOT expected of a man by society?
A. Ending his marriage without good reason.
B. Spending too much time with his friends.
C. Complaining about his marriage trouble.
D. Going out to ball-games too often. 54. Which of the following statements is best supported by the last paragraph?
A. Men keep their innermost feelings to themselves.
B. Women are more serious than men about marriage.
C. Men often take sudden action to end their marriage.
D. Women depend on others in making decisions. 55. The research done by psychologist Rubin focuses on __________.
A. happy and successful marriages
B. friendships of men and women

D. interactions between men and women
D.
A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone’s else or ourselves — the positive(good) and negative(bad) effects(影响) are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be .
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
56. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.
A. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
B. encouraging words give us confidence
C. negative words may let us down
D. words have a lasting effect on us
57. There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______.
A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone
58. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______.
A. praise ourselves
B. remind ourselves
C. relax ourselves
D. free ourselves
59. The author would probably hold the view that ___________.
A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B. negative words may encourage us to make more progress
C. people tend to remember friendly words
D. it is better to think twice before talking to others
60. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Self-talk always has positive effects on us.
B. We are fond of admitting talking to ourselves.
C. Nice words help to build up one’s confidence.
D. The effect of good words lasts longer than bad words.
