Many wild animals have gone extinct and many others are endangered. Here are some wild animals that may vanish if we don’t make greater efforts to protect them.

In January 2017,researchers found that lions in West Africa are nearly extinct. There are only about 400 left, and about half of those are at the breeding age, according to Panthera. It is a non-profit organization that spent six years tracking lions in 17 West African countries.Philipp Henschel,co-author of the report, told the BBC,“We are talking about some of the poorest countries in the world—many governments have bigger problems than protecting lions. Therefore, the governments are more likely to spend time and energy on these bigger problems rather than protecting lions.”

Found on the northeastern tip of Borneo in the Pacific Ocean, southeast of the Malay peninsula, the endangered pygmy elephants are the world’s smallest known sub-species of elephants. The biggest threats to their habitat are logging and the construction of palm oil plantations. They were widely considered to be the cause of 14 pygmy elephants’ deaths, likely caused by poisoning, which made headlines in January 2017.People who want to see them can “adopt”one through the World Wildlife Fund, which will send photos.

The Galápagos penguin has been listed as endangered animals partly because its survival is threatened by El Niño events, which make the water become too warm and cause food shortages.Found in the Galápagos Islands off Ecuador,it is also the only species of penguins found on the equator.

Snow leopards live in the mountains of central Asia.Their white and gray fur helps them hide well in their natural surroundings, and they have extra large paws to prevent them from sinking into the snow. They have been recognized as an endangered species since 1972 because of poaching(偷猎)and the illegal trading of fur and body parts, which are used in traditional Asian medicine.

B.14 of them died possibly because of poisoning.

C.They were found greatly endangered by an organization.

D.They proved to be the world’s smallest sub-species of elephants.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world,China is desperately trying to clone(克隆)the animal and save the endangered species(物种).That’s a move similar to what Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct,Dr.Duane Kraemer,a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China,is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week,Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes.“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy(having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk,so it is worth the effort,”adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M,the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark.We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction.I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do.It’s a research that is very much needed.”

5.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to .

A.make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

B.save endangered animals from dying out

C.collect DNA of endangered animals to study

D.transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

6.According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of .

  A.available panda eggs

  B.host animals

  C.qualified researchers

  D.enough money

7.The best title for the passage may be .

  A.China’s Success in Panda Cloning

B.The First Cloned Panda in the World

C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

D.China—the Native Place of Pandas Forever

The right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:

1 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking,running,tennis,cross-training or another specially will provide the best support for your feet.

Shop when you normally exercise.Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling up as much as a half-size by nighttime. 2

Try them on.Never grab a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy.Bring the type of socks you’d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.

3 You should be able to spread your toes out comfortably.Make sure there’s about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly(warmly and comfortably)against your heel and not move up and down.If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one.

Talk to an expert.Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride(步伐)and the shape of your feet. 4

5 Many trainers recommend switching footwear every three to five months,if possible,to maintain(保持)proper cushioning and support. One tip:if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.

A.Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes.

  B.Consider your type of exercise.

  C.Focus on fit.

D.So don’t shop first thing in the morning if you often work out in the evening.

E.Pay more attention to new style shoes.

  F.Replace worn shoes regularly.

G.Usually they can recommend the best shoes to guard against injuries.

根据画线词前面的“many others are endangered”以及后面的“if we don’t make greater efforts to protect them”可知这里是指如果我们不努力保护它们,它们可能会消失。

根据第二段的“Therefore, the governments are more likely to spend time and energy on these bigger problems rather than protecting lions.”

根据第三段的“They were widely considered to be the cause of 14 pygmy elephants’ deaths, likely caused by poisoning, which made headlines in January 2017.”

根据末段的“They have been recognized as an endangered species since 1972 because of poaching(偷猎)and the illegal trading of fur and body parts...”

从第六段第一句“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem”可知答案。

  .1.B 2.D 3.C 4.G 5.F

  .1.relatives 2.wrote 3.Delighted 4.cheerfully 5.and 6.was

  7.a 8.is coming 9.Breathing 10.if
