The multi-million pound new Library of Birmingham (LoB) will be the most visible sign of the way the city is accepting the digitalization (数字化) of everyday life.

Set to open in 2017, the £188m LoB is already beginning to take shape next to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, with which it will share some equipment.

As digital media (媒介) is important toits idea, the project is already providing chances for some of the many small new local companies working at the new technologies.

Brian Gambles, the LoB project director, says it is about giving people the right tools for learning:“The aim is to mix the physical with the digital, providing 24-hour services which can be used through many different ways. It is important to enable us to reach more people, more effectively.”

The digital library will, he says, be as important as the physical one, allowing the distant use of the services, making sure that it is never closed to the public.

Even before the LoB is complete, the public has been able to go online to visit the Virtual (虚拟的) LoB, designed by Baden, the Birmingham virtual worlds specialists. Not only have the public been able to learn about the LoB, but the virtual one has also enabled those working on the LoB to understand the building and how it will work before it even opens.

Two other small Birmingham-based digital companies are also working on the LoB projects. Substrat, a digital design company, is developing what it calls an example of an “enlarged reality” project. It is about the use of an exciting smart phone, an important part of the LoB which is in the early stages of development. And The People’s Archive is an online library of historical figures of the city being built up by a digital content company in Cahoots, in which users will be encouraged to add to and comment on the material.

Gambles says: “Technology will enable us to make the library’s content and services open to citizens as never before.”

  (2017·沈阳市二模,A)

The owner of a missing cat is asking for help. “My baby has been missing for over a month now, and I want him back so badly,” said Mrs. Brown, a 56yearold woman. Mrs. Brown lives by herself in a park near Clovis. She said that Clyde, her 7yearold cat, didn't come home for dinner more than a month ago. The next morning he didn't appear for breakfast, either. After Clyde missed an extraspecial lunch, she called the police. When the policeman asked her to describe Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear, and was seven years old and completely white.

?Is Clyde your child or your pet?” the officer asked. “Well, he's my cat.” Mrs. Brown replied. “Lady, you should report missing PERSONS, not missing CATS!” said the annoyed

policeman. “You can ask around your neighborhood or put up flyers.” Mrs. Brown figured that a

billboard would work a lot better than an 8?11 piece of paper on a telephone pole. There was an

empty billboard at the end of her street just off the highway, with a phone number on it.

She called that number, and they told her they could put up a picture of Clyde on the billboard for all to see. They told her it would cost only ¥3 000 a month. So she took most of the money out of her savings account and rented the billboard for a month.

The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared.

Because she has almost no money in savings, Mrs. Brown called the local newspaper to see if anyone could help her rent the billboard for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.

4.What is probably the best title for the passage?

  A.A Nearby Billboard

  B.Clyde and Mrs. Brown

  C.A Missing Cat

  D.Persons or Cats

  One possible version:

It is 30 years since China carried out the reform and opening up. Great changes have taken place and each part of China can give a clear sign of the rapid development and advance in today’s China.

Take people’s communication for example. In the past, our grandpas had to ask someone who could write for help when they wanted to contact their relatives or friends. As for our fathers, they kept in touch with each other by writing letters by themselves. With the development of science and technology, we can communicate with each other anytime and anywhere by mobile phone.

As a new generation, we are so lucky living in the new century. We’re proud of our country and its achievements. So we should cherish the happiness of today’s life. Meanwhile, we should put more effort and make more contributions to our beloved motherland. We believe she will become stronger and stronger.

Last year, researchers in Taiwan found that playing outdoors reduces progression of short-sightedness of school children. Around the same time, Global Times published a report, explaining that staring at the screen of an iPad closely tightens the muscles of the eyes and will lead children to suffer from headaches. If the muscles remain tightened for a long time, they will change the shape of the eyeballs, which will lend to short-sightedness.

Hu Li, an eye doctor at Guang7hou No. 3 Hospital, said that in recent weeks, 70~0% of his patients were children and the biggest cause of their eyesight problems was iPads and smart phones. Hu said he was working overtime all summer and he was not alone. Eye doctors at Sun Yat-sen University Hospital said they were seeing over 300 children a day.

In 2017, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that China has the second highest rate of short-sightedness in the world. 【参考范文】读写任务 (One possible version)

The cause of short-sightedness is explained with two examples of doctors’ findings and figures from the National Bureau of Statistics. They showed that short-sighted students are increasing due to the use of iPads and smart phones.

Why are short-sighted students increasing? That’s because many students often spend too much time surfing the Internet: playing games and watching videos. On the other hand, most of them usually overwork their eyes since they have to do a lot of reading and endless homework every day.

In my junior high school, I was short- sighted and for some time I couldn’t see the words on the blackboard clearly, so I couldn’t follow the teacher in class. Naturally, I fell behind and had to spend most of my spare time catching up with my classmates.

In order to keep good eyesight, firstly we shouldn’t overwork our eyes. Secondly, we’d better stop to rest after we do some reading for an hour or so. Lastly, we should make it a rule to do eye exercises every day.
