Ada Byron was the daughter of the British poet Lord Byron and Anne Isabelle Mibanke, who separated from Byron just a month after Ada was born.Four months later,Byron left England forever.Ada never met her father and was raised by her mother.Lady Byron wished her daughter to be unlike her poetical father, and she insisted that Ada study mathematics.Ada’s potential for mathematics became apparent as early as 1828,when she produced the design for a flying machine. It was mathematics that gave her life its wings.

Ada met Babbage in 1833,when she was just 18,and they began to write to each other to discuss with each other on the topics of mathematics, logic, and finally all subjects.Babbage was famous as the inventor of a calculating machine. In 1842,an Italian mathematician,Louis Menebrea, published a memoir(学术论文集)in French on the subject of the Analytical Engine.Babbage asked Ada to translate it.During a nine-month period in 1842-1843,she worked hard on the memoir and a set of notes she added to it.She was considered as the first to create the world’s computer programme.

In 1835,Ada married William King, who was ten years older than her.Ada had three children. The family and its fortunes were very much controlled by Lady Byron, whose domineering(专横的)manner was rarely opposed by King.

Ada died of cancer in 1852,at the age of 37.In 1980,165 years after Ada’s birth, the US Defense Department announced a powerful new computer language. They named it Ada in honour of her great contribution in the history of computing.

If you are not a big fan of tomatoes,it may be best to keep away from the town of Bunol around this time of the year. That’s because every year on the last Wednesday of August, the normally sleepy Spanish town of just 9,000 residents becomes the center stage for the world’s largest food fight—the La Tomatina.

The roots of the festival could be traced back to the year 1944 when some young people decided to disturb a parade they were not allowed to participate in.They did that by attacking everyone with the first produce they could get from the nearby vegetable vendors(摊贩).Luckily for all,it happened to be tomatoes. The kids had so much fun that they kept returning every year and soon other bystanders joined in and a fun festival was born!

Over the years, the town has turned the food fight into a week-long festival that includes colorful parades, dancing and even fireworks. On the night before it ends, the streets of Bunol,Spain are lined up with vendors cooking up giant pans of delicious tomato Paella(肉菜饭) on wood-burning fires.Tourists and locals gather to enjoy the good food and drinks until the early next morning.

As the time for the fight draws near, thousands of people flock to the Plaza Mayor. This year so many people wanted to take part in it that town officials decided to limit the number of people and charge a fee of about $13 USD.

After the tomato fight started, within a few minutes the entire town square and the people in it were covered with tomato mush. The festival did not come to an end until every red tomato had been used.
