  第二部分

  阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

  A

The “Occupy Wall Street” movement gained more support on Wednesday as unions and students joined in, speaking out against Wall Street greed and economic inequality.

With the protests developing from a group of young people's camping out near the New York Stock Exchange on Sept.17 to largescale movements across the country and around the world, people can't help asking:What has led to “ Occupy Wall Street” ?

Usually, rebellious movements can be easily set off by depression and recession(衰退). Three years after the severe economic crisis, the U.S. economy now is stuck again.

Protesters are not satisfied with the present economic situation since unemployment rate is above 9 percent and economic growth has slowed. The housing market is still struggling for a recovery three years after the bubble burst. People are losing their houses even after they have paid a large amount of mortgage(抵押).It is getting difficult for young people to find jobs.

People fear that a similar crisis like the one in 2008 may be already on its way.

It is Wall Street that possesses the most riches, filled with greed and corruption. It is Wall Street greed that, at least partly, led to the financial crisis and economic recession in 2008.

It is Wall Street's “fat cats” who take taxpayers' aid money as their own big bonus.

With the growing economic crisis around the world, people realize that Wall Street is responsible for it.

So they try to target people who created the crisis.

The majority of the protesters are young people under 30. Many of them are unemployed. Some are students with mountains of loans.

Some are hardworking people about to lose their houses.

They are complaining that the hardworking middle class is getting poor, while Wall Street stays wealthy.

  William Cohan,

  author of

  Money and

Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the

World, wrote recently that Wall Street not only learned nothing from the 2008 crisis, they are also trying to kill all reforms that might “break this dangerous cycle in which bankers get very rich while the rest of working people suffer from their mistakes”.

“You're going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You're really lucky!”

Does this sound familiar? Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home.

But does it seem true all the time? Is your life in this new country always wonderful and exciting? A great many facts show that it's not easy for newcomers to adjust to life in a new culture.

They have to experience culture shock.

What causes culture shock? Maybe the weather is unpleasant.

  Perhaps the customs are different.

Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office, or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes.

  The simplest things seem difficult.

  The language may be difficult.

The food may seem strange to you.

If you don't look similar to the natives, you may feel strange.

You may feel as if everyone is watching you.

  In fact, you_are_always_watching_yourself.

Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another.

But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people.

A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries.

They were active and successful in their community (社区).

They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries.

They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity.

They have to build a new selfimage.

Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation (晕头转向), which may be homesickness, imagined illness, or even paranoia (妄想症).

When people feel the disorientation of culture shock, they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time.

They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment.

They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security.

This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture.

Familiarity and experience are the long term ways to settle the problem of culture shock.

Across the United States, there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one citybut kept both their names.

  WinstonSalem is one of them.

It's a midsized city in what's called the plateau(high land),between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early this century.

It's home to the nation's biggest openair tobacco market.

The giant R J.Reynolds Tobacco Company's headquarters is in WinstonSalem, and Winston is the name of one of Reynolds' bestknown cigarette brands.

Fastgrowing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem,so in 1913, people in the areavoted to combine them into a single place.

From a historical and tourist point of view, Salem, or Old Salem, as it's called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women's work and brainpower.

In fact, one of the nation's oldest boarding schools for young women—the Moravians' Salem Academy founded in 1772—is still in operation.

Over the years, Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a nonprofit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what's called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th—century houses, taverns and Moravian dormitory buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper in WinstonSalem.

The historic community is booming again. Just as R J. Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue and donations.

As we know, the very first World Expo, the Great Exhibition of 1851,took place in the Crystal Palace in London,UK.Ever since then, the goals of World Expos have been both highminded as well as commercial.Visitors are able to explore the world outside of their everyday experience—outside cultures, new scientific advancements, and new inventions.World Expos have excited and inspired more and more people in the world.

On December 3,2002,the Bureau of International Expositions(or call it BIE) announced that Shanghai will host Expo 2010.The BIE had received bids from five cities to host Expo 2010.Among the 5 nice cities, the BIE chose Shanghai at last! It's really an exciting news for not only Shanghainese, but also all of Chinese people.

The Expo Site lies along both sides of the Huangpu River. There are many countries' and regions' theme pavilions, among which China's pavilion is called the Crown of the East.Brazil will decorate its Expo pavilion like a green “Bird's Nest”,the nickname for the National Stadium in Beijing that hosted the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games, with the theme “Pulsing Cities:Feel the Life of Brazilian Cities.” The USA Pavilion will showcase sustainability, teamwork, health, struggle and achievements.Russia will decorate its pavilion for the 2010 World Expo like a fairytale world, showing a comfortable city as seen through children's eyes. They pavilion theme is “New Russia:city and citizen.”

I still remember the day when I got the lowest score in a physics exam and was laughed at by some classmates.Discouraged as I felt at that time,I made up my mind not to lose face again.Instead of distraction,I became active in class and did extra exercises out of class.Whenever I had difficulties,I overcame my shyness and turned to my teacher and my classmates for help. Finally I was able to improve my physics a lot, which increased my confidence so much that I took greater interest in study and worked harder than before. After some time,I became one of the top students in my class.

My experience tells me that it is not what has happened to us,but how we react to it that matters. When something happens, the only thing in our power is our attitude towards it.

Should parents be banned from entering campus?

  Recently,campus_security_has_become_a_hot_issue.To_ensure_security,strangers_are_banned_from_entering_campus_by_our_school,and_a_survey_has_been_made_among_the_students_about_whether_parents_should_be_included.

According to the survey,60% of the students think parents should be included because it is a rule everyone should obey.Another 25% subscribe to the view that there is no need for the ban as their beloved parents couldn't be a danger to anyone. However, the rest think the guards can make a proper decision depending on certain situations.

Personally,I agree with the first. As the saying goes,to forestall is better than to amend.Proper measures should be taken before it's too late.As for parents, they have some other ways to keep in touch with their children, like making calls or asking for teachers' help. All in all, campus security calls for everyone's concern and cooperation.
