Many years ago mathematics was my enemy.I was afraid of it and I hated it so much that you could not imagine.
Then came a new teacher to our village. On the first day,he entered the classroom with huge steps, reached the blackboard in a few seconds, and wrote his name on the blackboard. Some letters were in higher places and some were in lower places;some were as big as the board itself and some were so small that we had to open our eyes a lot to see them;some were wide enough, but on the other hand some were too thin.
As he turned around, the class suddenly became still and silent, trying to make_out what it was.As we read his name,we were all smiling,no laughing out loud.Soon we realized that he had a special and lasting sense of humor and we began to learn mathematics in a relaxed and happy mood(心情).
As for my mathematics study, the barriers(障碍)began to turn into pieces, and the fear began to disappear slowly. What was dark and colorless suddenly became exciting, challenging, interesting and above all simply fun. There was some humor added to every sum(算术)and there was fun in every problem.

We spend around one third of our lives in bed,and the body does a lot of its repair work as we sleep,so enough good quality sleep is very important to our health. It doesn't stop there, though—some sleep positions are healthier than others. So which sleep position is the healthiest?
Sleeping on your back is the healthiest sleep position,Health benefits include avoiding back and neck pain.Because the head is raised above the stomach when you sleep on your back, this position is best for people who suffer from nighttime acid reflux(胃酸逆流)as well.Around 80% of heartburn(胃灼热)sufferers have problems during the night,so sleeping on their back could help a lot of people to enjoy a good night's sleep. If the sleep position alone is not enough to alleviate the condition, try raising the head of the bed by up to 4 inches by placing blocks under it.
When you sleep on your back, your face is in a natural position. This means less wrinkles(皱纹).
If you really can't face sleeping on your back, another healthy sleep position is the side sleep. It's almost as good as the back position, and it's better for people who snore(打鼾)and their partners.Whichever sleep position you choose, use a pillow that supports the head and the neck without raising the head unnaturally,as this can bring neck pain.

Many people have tried to simplify(简化)the spelling of English words.Unlike other languages,English sometimes spells the same sounds in very different ways. For example, there is “light” but “white”,“loan” but “phone”,and there are at least seven different ways of pronouncing “ough”:“though”,“through”,“bough”,“cough”,“enough”,“ought” and “thorough”.
The American President Theodore Roosevelt almost succeeded in simplifying English spelling. In 1906,Andrew Carnegie started the Simplified Spelling Board. He was one of the richest men in the United States of America. The board's plan was to make the spelling of words nearer to the way they sound. For example, the word “though” would be spelt “tho” and “through” would become “thru”.Other people on the board were Melvil Dewey, the head of the New York libraries, and Professor Brander Matthews of Columbia University. They explained their idea to President Roosevelt, who thought that it was indeed logical. He immediately asked the government printer to use simplified spelling in all government letters.
But people didn't like the change, even if it made life easier. So the new simpler spelling was not popular.More importantly, when the American politicians(政客)discussed the plan, they did not like it either.Because Roosevelt did not want to have any problems with the politicians,he changed his mind and told the printer to go back to the old way of spelling.
Since then no one in any government has dared to simplify English spelling. However, people do simplify some words, mainly in advertisements. For example,we often see “tonite” instead of “tonight” and “thru” instead of “through”.

There are only 24 hours in a day,but people can use the time wisely. In other words, good time management(管理) is important if you want to succeed.
Knowing the importance of daily matters is the first step
towards good time management.Write down the things that you want to do and organise them according to their level of importance. The important thing
should
be done first.
If there are too many things that have to be done in one day, then you have to give up doing something that is less important on your list.
Besides this, you need to spend a specific(特定的)amount of time doing all the activities you have written down and make sure you finish them on time.People often slow down in their work even though they know that time will never wait for them.Make sure you keep to your plan and finish the tasks one by one.Do not try to do too many things at once.
Also, you can group similar activities together and do them one by one.For example, you can group all the tasks you need to do in the office together and do them while you're in office.Do all the tasks that have to be done in one place first, and then move to the next place to do the other tasks.
“The bad news is that time flies. The good news is that you're the pilot,”said Michael Althsuler.Your future is in your hands,so remember to invest(投资)your time wisely from today on.

Happiness can be described as a positive mood and a pleasant state of mind. According to recent surveys, sixty to seventy percent of Americans consider themselves to be moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very happy. Psychologists have been studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in a clearly ideal situation necessarily happy. The ideal situation may have little to do with his actual feelings.
A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness. Though both may contribute, they are only chief factors if the person is seriously undereducated or actually suffering from lack of physical needs.
The rich are not likely to be happier than the middleincome group or even those with very low incomes. People with college educations are somewhat happier than those who did not graduate from high school, and it is believed that this is mainly because they have more opportunity to control their lives. Yet people with a high income and a college education may be less happy than those with the same income and no college education.
Poor health does not rule out happiness except for the seriously disabled or those in pain. Learning to deal with a health problem can contribute to happiness. Those with a good material life are happier in general, but those who have a loving, affectionate relationship are happier than those who rely on material alone. Love has a closer relationship with happiness than any other factor.
It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happiest when they feel they are increasing their level no matter where it stands at a given time.
Children whose parents were happily married have happier childhoods, but are not necessarily happier adults.
The best formula for happiness is to be able to develop the ability to bear failure, to have a personal participation and devotion, and to develop selfconfidence and selfesteem.
52.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.happiness is predictable rather than passively accepted
B.a person in an obviously ideal situation must be happy
C.the rich are likely to be happier than the middleincome group
D.happiness is not necessarily connected to one's situation in society
答案 D [推断题。文章说受教育的程度,收入的高低都不见得能决定一个人是否幸福。由此推断出社会地位跟一个人是否有幸福感没有必然的联系。]

C.have less opportunity to control their lives

答案 D [细节理解题。第三段中讲到,受过高等教育的人更为幸福一些,这主要是因为他们有更多的机会可能控制自己的生活。]
54.According to the article, happiness is greatly dependent on ________.
A.a happy childhood in a happily married family
B.great wealth obtained by receiving a good education
C.a feeling that conditions are becoming for the better
D.a college degree and a high income

写作一
As can be seen in the picture, some people are standing hand in hand, forming the shape of a heart. They are all smiling happily.
This picture
conveys the message that sometimes we need to be united. It is essential for us to work in a united way.United,we stand;divided,we fall.
We should bear in mind that we cannot survive alone and frequently we need to unite with others to achieve our goal.
写作二
Dear_Sir_or_Madam,
I'm writing to tell you something about the recording pen I bought from your website several days ago. There seems to be something wrong with it.First, the voice isn't so clear as you claimed.Second,it's not easy to operate, which caused me much trouble.Third,it often breaks down, while a recording pen at such a price shouldn't have had so many problems.
Due to its poor quality and much inconvenience it has
caused,I wonder
whether
you can do something about it.I would appreciate it very much if I can get my money back and I'll send it back to you as soon as you return the money to me.If it can't be helped,I wish you could have it repaired or changed.
I'm looking forward to your early reply.
Best wishes,
Yours,
Li_Hua
