Music is a way for people to express themselves and share ideas. It evokes nice memories and has the power to bring people together. But today music is lost.
Pop and rap music has evolved into a shallow industry that appeals to what the public wants to hear and see. Pop and rap music is no longer composed of real emotions, but instead unhealthy themes of money, sex, and fame.
Not all musical groups begin like this. Many artists are original and talented, but they may feel the pressure of losing support of listeners and have to follow the mainstream. Often their songs are written by experts who know what is appealing to a certain age group. Soon their improved songs can be heard everywhere. But these songs are empty shells, lacking in creativity and meaningful themes.
Many rap songs today fit into a very slim mold — not just the music, but those who perform it. Some female musicians struggle with eating disorders because of the increased attention of the media and the public on their looks instead of their musical talent. Most popular songs follow the same pattern — singable, with an easy beat.
These songs teach listeners that what's on the outside is important, and money matters. They encourage people to act tough, embrace violence, and run after the luxurious way of life.
Music is no longer just for pleasure, but instead is a huge part of the economy. It is valued for its power to influence people everywhere. Not only does the music business make money from songs, but lots of useless products carry rap and pop stars' names and faces.
Why do most teenagers only listen to pop and rap music when so many other music types exist? Maybe it's because everywhere we look, we are bombarded(轰炸) with the same music: on the radio, on TV, on the computer. Perhaps they have never listened to anything else.
My suggestion is not to buy into music like this when you can explore something new. Expand your horizons. Dig up your parents' old records and CDs. You never know what you might find.

Ⅳ.阅读简答
When you feel tired, how do you relax? Drink coffee, take a bath, do some exercise, or play some music and dance?
For dance music fans and nightclub lovers, the world famous English DJ (disco jockey) Sasha will bring them the world's finest dance music. He is coming to Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai as part of his world tour in support of his new CD.
One of the main roles of music has always been to go with dancing. But, today's dance music is very different from the past. The history of dance music goes back to the 16th century. In the Renaissance (文艺复兴) and Baroque (巴洛克) periods in Europe, rich people were expected to be able to dance at social events. Each type of dance gave rise to its own form of music.
During the 18th and 19th centuries the most popular dances were the Waltz and the Polka (波尔卡舞). In this period, dances were often written for the concert hall. For example, symphonies (交响乐) would have a waltz movement, and piano pieces were sometimes in waltz or polka.
In the 1970s, dance music moved into new places called discos. The music was faster, had more bass and started to become more electric. Disco music began to develop in the US and around Europe. By the 1980s the music became much faster and even more electronic. In the 1990s clubs took over discos. DJs mixed other people's music. Club dance rhythms became a major part of popular music. Club dance music has different forms, including drum and bass (低音乐器), hiphop, R &B. It makes use of technology and DJs play a bigger part in spreading the music.

Dear James,
I was very shocked to get your letter saying that the noise from my flat has been spoiling your evenings and causing you some distress. I am really sorry. I had no idea that you had been suffering so much, so I hope you will accept my apologies.
As you have guessed, I am an art student preparing for the College Entrance Examination. I have to practice playing the piano every day. Sometimes I have problems playing the tune properly, so I have to play it repeatedly. This has meant a lot of noise to you, especially in the evening.
With the exam approaching, I still have to work hard, but I have decided to practice only during daytime hours, so you won't be disturbed in the evening again, I promise.
Sorry to have caused these problems.
