  Unit 3 Under the sea

From the picture we can see a family of three walking on a long red carpet. The son, well dressed, waves proudly in the middle while the father behind bends forward to hold the jacket and the mother in front rolls out the carpet, sweating.

It shows a common ①phenomenon nowadays that children are the focus of families, shouldering the hope of their parents. Parents arrange everything for their children and spare no effort to pave the way for their success. As a consequence, children become ②so reliant on their parents that they have no independent thought or creative ideas.

Such a situation is of great concern. In my opinion, overprotection and too much care are extremely bad for children's development. Instead of doing everything for them, parents should encourage their children to overcome difficulties and inspire them to develop by themselves. Only in this way can they grow up to be independent and become truly successful.

Do lobsters, crabs (蟹) or other crustaceans (甲壳纲动物) feel pain? We certainly act as if they don't.

Most chefs cook lobsters and crabs alive, usually by dumping them in

boiling water, along with melted butter. That's the appeal of crustaceans — there's no fresher food.

We may feel a bit of

guilt, or maybe just discomfort, when we hear the creatures rattling (发出卡嗒卡嗒的声音) around the inside of the pot as

  the water boils.

But that feeling usually dissolves for lobster

lovers by the time we crack open a claw and dig out the

delicious meat. We wouldn't dream of doing the same thing to a

live chicken or a pig which is dead well before the cooking

process begins, but those crustaceans are different. They don't

  even feel pain. Right?

Actually, they just might. That's the conclusion of a new

study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Robert W. Elwood and Barry Magee of Queen's University in Belfast examined the reaction of common shore crabs to small electrical

  shocks.

Ninety crabs were placed in a brightly lit area and were given the choice of moving to one of two dark shelters. (Shore crabs like to hide in dark, tight spaces.) Once they'd made their choice, the crabs in one of the shelters were exposed to an electric shock. After a rest period, the crabs were returned to the lit tank.

Most of the crabs went back into the dark shelters, and then the same crabs were given another electric shock. When they were placed back into the lit tank for the third time, the majority of the shocked crabs instead went to the other dark shelter,

avoiding the one where they had repeatedly been shocked.

As Elwood put it, the crabs' choice indicated they wanted to escape the shocks:

  having experienced

two rounds of shocks, the crabs learned to avoid the shelter where they received the shock. They were willing to give up their hideaway in order to avoid the source of their probable pain.

1.According to the author, people cook the crab alive due to the belief that ________.

A.it is not guilty to treat a crab cruelly

B.it is too hard to kill a crab

C.a crab doesn't feel pain as a chicken or a pig does

D.the crab is a kind of popular and healthy seafood

根据第一段中的“We certainly act as if they don't.”

2.The underlined word “dissolves” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.

  A.becomes weaker

  B.strengthens gradually

  C.comes into being

  D.remains unchanged

3.In the experiment, the shore crabs ________.

A.were placed into two dark shelters

B.were given electric shocks in the lit tank

C.were able to choose which shelter to go to

D.were put into the lit tank twice

根据第三段中的“Ninety crabs were placed ... made their choice ...”

4.What does Robert W. Elwood and Barry Magee's new study prove?

A.It is hard to tell whether a voiceless shore crab is feeling pain or not.

B.Shore crabs react to electric shocks and seemingly feel pain.

C.Shore crabs prefer a dark, tight shelter as their habitat.

D.Bright light causes discomfort to crustaceans.

根据最后一段中的“They were willing to give up their hideaway in order to avoid the source of their probable pain.”

Nothing Succeeds Without a Strong Will

It is universally acknowledged that people cannot succeed or achieve their targets without a strong will and persistence. One of the most typical examples is that in the presentday society, a growing number of people give up or fail to quit smoking just because of their poor willpower during the process. A variety of factors may account for this phenomenon as follows.

For one thing, no one can deny the fact that persistence is the key point in accomplishing one's task. It is of importance for people to stick to their original aim. A great number of dragsters would stop smoking a couple of days after they have made their determination, but only a few of them may succeed in the end. For another, the people who cannot quit smoking may easily be affected by his circumstance and surroundings. In that case, people tend to fail to resist various temptations around them.

From what has been discussed above, we may safely come to the conclusion that only by concentrating on the object and strong selfdiscipline can we obtain our goals successfully in the future.
